The Appeal

It's a hard task to try and find a city car more universally acclaimed than the Mini - whether it be the 60s classic or the modern generations of the perky little car, they've proven a remarkably enduring icon. The R56 certainly lost a little subtlety from its predecessors, but it was lighter, lost none of the performance - and if you got a Cooper S? You had one of the best hot hatches of the 21st century.

The performance is sharp and nimble, the car is attractive and nicely styled and the cabin is comfortable. It's a real driver-led car, and a good example is rapidly gaining a whole new level of reputation with enthusiasts. While the cars that followed have somewhat missed the point, the R56 remains refreshingly true to its principles.
