The Appeal

There aren't many cars more loaded with character than the 'Frogeye' Sprite. Perky performance, one-of-a kind styling and familiar, easy-going Austin mechanics make for easily one of the most charming cars of the era. The beauty of it all is deniably that the people on the pavement are likely to reflect its big friendly smile!

This fine 1959 example was rebuilt and restored in 2014, followed by a two-pack paint finish in the car's near-synonymous leaf green. 11 years later, it's settled into a fine, period-correct charm, with a more powerful engine leaving it performing better than it did fresh-from-factory. Not to be missed!

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in 1959
  • The DVLA records 4 previous keepers
  • Purchased in 1997 and restored from a sound but non-running car
  • Fully rebuilt and mild road tuned engine fitted by renowned engineer during restoration
  • Fully rebuilt and restored again in 2014
  • All instruments were reset upon restoration

The Condition

  • Painted in leaf green with modern two-pack paint
  • Butt joints sealed with paint and wax oiled in closed areas and compartments
  • Rear structure, sills, and floor checked, repaired, and replaced as needed
  • Steel bonnet
  • Some light blemishing, commensurate with age
  • Very light patina to the brightwork, particularly underneath the headlights
  • Austin-Healey wheels are in fine order
  • Underside is clean and solid
  • Complete with soft top
  • Interior re-upholstered in 2014 with correct green vinyl and dash
  • All instruments correct and refurbished
  • Electronic rev counter
  • Original steering wheel 
  • Fitted with three-point harnesses
  • Always stored in a garage, not used in wet or salted road conditions

The Mechanics

  • 1,275cc gas-flowed A-Series 4-cylinder engine, donated from an MG Midget
  • Re-engineered gearbox
  • Disc brakes and MG later disc brake master cylinder and pedal box fitted
  • Frontline suspension wishbone kit fitted to front wheels
  • With an expected 80HP at flywheel this Sprite has a significant performance above standard
  • SU suck model fuel pump mounted in engine bay
  • The car runs on an alternator with negative earth
  • Switch-activated cooling fan mounted in bonnet mouth
  • We understand the car to be in fine fettle throughout
  • We've no reports of any mechanical issues
