The appeal
This terrific Triumph is a fantastic open top classic that draws looks and favourable comments from all who see it (we can attest first hand by the conversations with strangers had during our photoshoot). With a designed penned by the renowned Giovanni Michelotti, it is an iconic British classic, instantly recognisable and gaining an enthusiastic following with plenty of aftermarket parts support.
This Herald has had a significant amount of work done to the mechanical’s, chassis and body during the car’s time with its current owner with the aim of updating and restoring the car whilst still keeping its period charm. This would be a perfect car for someone to put their mark on or simply enjoy in the sunshine.
The history and paperwork
- V5C in owner’s name, along with an original handbook
- Haynes manual and service training notes pack copy
- Invoices for various miscellaneous items and a spare parts catalogue
- Heap of back issues of the Triumph owner’s club magazine ‘The Courier’
The owner reports that they have had the car’s bodywork restored and painted by a local classic car specialist in 2019 along with some other work which is bullet pointed below,
- Overhaul of the braking system
- New front suspension
- Dynamo to alternator conversion
- Steering column bushing replaced
- New front loom with an added fuse box
- Five new tyres with less than 150 miles completed on them
- New steel exhaust middle and back box
- Refurbished gearbox, clutch and slave cylinder
- New rear outriggers
- Hood frame refurbished
The Interior

- Minor wear and tear with a front seat repair but overall, in good condition
The interior of the Triumph is black leather with the seats not having much wear and tear at all to them apart from one small repair patch on the front passenger side seat (pictured). The seats are comfortable and hinge forward with ease.
The carpets are in good condition as is the underside of the convertible hood with the hood folding mechanism being refurbished during the restoration work in 2019. The dash does have some light scratches and some small chips to the glovebox door (which hides the fuse box) and the trip meter is not currently working but the radio, is reportedly working well and looks perfectly period sat underneath the dash.
The boot is in good condition too with a new wheel well and carpet and there is a small patch of welding which is visible. The spare wheel however is in good condition and has a brand-new tyre fitted.
The Exterior

- Some blistering to the paint under the body line on driver’s door and near left hand side of the boot.
- Chassis is reported to have been waxoyled
The Triumph looks fantastic in white with a black leather interior and hood/tonneau cover, the condition of the exterior is good with the only points being the blistering paint described above (please also check out the pictures of the driver’s side door to check for yourself). The owner reports the car had several new panels welded in during the restoration work including the chassis which is reported to have been waxoyled. The wheels are in good condition too with their chrome caps and brand-new tyres.
Once the hood is up, there are some gaps between the windows and the hood which would definitely let water in should it be out in a downpour, the owner reports that this might be due to the drop of the doors. The hood is nice and tight elsewhere though and the window panels are free from hazing or rips, the rest of the hood is also free from fading or rips/tears.
The Mechanics
- Engine changed to the 1300cc unit

- Brakes are standard with the owner reporting no pulling to either side
- Gearbox refurbished with all gear changes reported to be working well
The Triumph is reported to be in good health mechanically with very light use from the current owner. On the day of our photoshoot, the car started well with no issues and drive to the location, it was also moved around at location and performed as expected with no fuss or unwanted noises or issues.
The owner has refurbished the gearbox and the car has reportedly had a mechanical overhaul including the front suspension and brakes all round. For a 53-year-old car it performed admirably on the day. After driving around, we couldn’t see any signs of fluid leaks in the engine bay or on the ground around where the car was parked. The Triumph seems to be a very simple car mechanically and one that’s definitely within the skillset of a competent home mechanic to maintain and fix.
Summary
This is a great looking Triumph Herald that is ready to go and enjoy the last of the summer sun, it has a few bits that need attending too but from what we can see it had the complicated oily bits sorted and the body work restoration means that you only need to keep a precautionary eye on the state of the metal work for years to come.
