The Appeal
Peugeot’s rugged 504, like Mercedes-Benz’s W123, was the car that powered the world, a familiar sight across Europe as well as Africa and Asia. There were many different versions of which the handsome coupe and cabriolet are now the most collectable.
Designed by Pininfarina and built to the same high standards as the saloon, the cabriolet offered buyers practical four seater versatility with the pep of a 2litre fuel injected motor.
This bronze 1974 cabriolet shows just how well these beautiful cars have aged. Solid and presentable with a mechanical overhaul and fresh tan interior, it offers the buyer the chance to enjoy as it is with scope to further improve.

The 504 cabriolet is from a Peugeot era that the firm’s move into the broad mass market has often extinguished in the minds of those old enough to remember it. The exquisite interior of this 1974 car provides that reminder, delivering a quality and level of luxury that would not have been unfamiliar to owners of contemporary Mercedes.
It is a very pretty design with a low, wide dashboard lightly trimmed with wood and equipped with smart Jaeger dials.
This interior of this car is a blend of new and old, the lovely tan leather seats being a particular highlight. They have been clearly trimmed to a high standard and look virtually unused. A beautiful wood-rimmed Nardi wheel, wooden gear knob and period-correct radio complete the impression of a very pleasant place to drive or be driven.
We are told that the dashboard has also been renovated. The wood veneers are in very good condition but there is a small nick in the dashboard vinyl on the glovebox lid. The mirror on the passenger sun visor is lightly tarnished and there is a crack in the plastic surround on the rear view mirror. Some of the switches on the dashboard are worn with faded white decals, but this is part of this 49 year old car’s charm.
The vinyl door trims appear to be original and are in good, complete condition but with some signs of age to the fixtures and fittings. There are rubber floor mats fitted.
In the boot there is a vinyl floor covering in fair condition and there are some scuffs to the boot trim.
The Exterior

Pininfarina has a long association with Peugeot but the 504 coupe and cabriolet must surely rank among the best of the partnership. As simple and uncluttered as they are long and low, they have aged particularly well.
The bronze metallic paintwork of this car appears to be original and the car is generally in solid, presentable condition but with scope to improve. There are some marks around the car and some areas that the buyer may wish to attend to before corrosion takes hold. But this is a car that could be used as is and subjected to running improvements.
The bodywork has various chips and scratches, particularly on the leading edge of the passenger side front wing and the driver’s side rear wing, including the wheelarch. Elsewhere there are some stone chips on the front, chips on the driver’s door and the ends of both sills are beginning to show signs of surface rust.
The chromework also appears to be original and is presentable with no obvious pitting. The trim and badging is in similar condition.
The car sits on beautiful Dunlop alloys that are in original condition. They are unmarked but a polish or refurbishment would restore their glory.
The fabric roof is in good condition and appears to fit well. There is a black tonneau cover.

The 504 was an early adopter of mechanical fuel injection, which gives this 2litre cabriolet 106bhp and a significant turn of speed. An ‘Injection’ badge on the boot highlights how unusual and technically innovative this specification was at the time. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via slick Peugeot 4spd manual gearbox.
We are told that the engine of this car has been rebuilt, although we do not know when during the owner’s tenure this happened. The fuel injection pump and fuel pump were also replaced at the same time. The brakes have also been overhauled.
Summary
The 504 cabriolet was peak Peugeot, a handsome Pininfarina-penned design that was quick, comfortable and very well built.
This smart 1974, low mileage cabriolet shows why these cars are so revered now. Sympathetically improved both mechanically and cosmetically, it is ready to enjoy and has scope for further investment.
