1975 Alpine A310 VG 1600

Strong points

  • Old restoration in very good condition
  • Modified for amateur competition use
  • Upgraded and rebuilt 1.6 litre A110 engine with twin Webers
  • Very rare 4-cylinder A310 model
  • Influential design and latest development by Jean Rédélé
  • Powerful and well maintained rear wheel drive rally car

The appeal

The older A110 may be better known, but the A310 was perhaps more influential. It was the last car developed by Alpine founder Jean Rédélé, and its engineering was 'borrowed' by Lotus and DeLorean to create the DMC-12. Trevor Fiore's clean lines also strongly influenced Monteverdi's magnificent Hai 450.
The A310 was designed to be a more spacious and comfortable replacement for the A110, while retaining the same rally-inspired layout. This beautiful and rare 4-cylinder 'VG' car - built for just one year - is part of the illustrious competitive history of these performance cars. It was restored in 2011 to a high standard and has been fitted as a rally car with arch extensions, roll bar, harness and a 1600cc A110 engine with twin twin-body Webers.
The specification is attractive and so is the condition. It sports a splendid classic light blue, with tasteful decals, auxiliary headlights and Gotti bolt-on wheels adding to its appeal.

History and documents

  • First registered on 4 December 1975
  • Restored in 2011
  • 2016 independent inspection report included in photographs
  • One of only 2,340 4-cylinder cars
  • Rare "VG" car built only in 1976 with chassis number 3008
  • Old photographs showing the car with rally stickers

Condition

  • Classic A310 styling finished in light blue with race-inspired enhancements
  • Wider arches for wider track and better rally performance
  • Restored in 2011 and the paintwork remains in very good condition
  • Fitted with a range of vintage and rally-inspired stickers
  • The fibreglass bodywork looks very good with no obvious damage or deterioration
  • Due to the age of the vehicle and the older restoration, there are a few marks to report
  • Fitted with beautiful Gotti wheels with quality competition tyres
  • Original alloy spare wheel in front boot
  • Distinctive six-headlight front with auxiliary lights
  • Well-maintained exterior features, including fluted bonnet and headlamp covers
  • Modified and lightened interior retains many original features
  • Black bucket seats with four-point harness
  • Rally accessories, including integrated odometer
  • Original Veglia dials and instrument panel, both in very good condition
  • Well-maintained interior elements, including original grey carpets and black door panels

The mechanics

  • The "VG" cars were originally powered by 1,647cc R17 Gordini engines with single Weber carburettors.
  • This car is now fitted with a Renault 1,596 cm³ 4-cylinder engine shared with the older A110.
  • Visibly fitted with the original Type 365 5-speed manual gearbox
  • Engine rebuilt in 2001
  • Optimised with twin Weber twin-barrel carburettors
  • Larger oil pan fitted
  • Aluminium engine guard
  • DEVIL exhaust system
  • SPAX adjustable shock absorbers
  • No operating or driving problems reported
