1975 Yamaha RD250 D

Highlights

  • A pristine example restored to a superlative standard
  • Legendary model that changed the motorcycle industry
  • Matching numbers engine and frame
  • Ideal to show or simply ride and enjoy
  • An exceedingly rare find in this condition

The Appeal

Before 1983, learner riders in the UK could ride any motorcycle with a displacement of no more than 250cc. The success of the Yamaha RD250 single-handedly changed that legislation; it was unlike any 250cc machine anyone had ever encountered.
Those accustomed to old British four-stroke 250 singles will know they’re not the most rapid, so it’s perhaps no surprise that the lightweight, two-stroke RD250 with its five/six-speed gearbox absolutely trounced the best the likes of BSA and Triumph had to offer. Soon, young British riders wanted nothing but this all-new Yamaha - it even looked more exciting than home-grown bikes of the era.
Today, they’re as popular as ever, predominantly among riders who had them in period (or wished they had). This 1975 example is in fantastic condition following an extensive and very costly restoration. The majority of the work was carried out by the previous keeper, but the current owner completed the project to this very high standard. It’s a matching numbers bike and is accompanied by a substantial history file.
Whether you’re looking for an RD250 show bike, this 1975 example would be eminently well-suited. But it’s no mere display piece; it runs and rides readily should you wish to ride this magnificent motorcycle as its makers intended.
