The Appeal
Everything was big and bold in the 1970s, from hairstyles to shoulder pads. As such, the Porsche 911 was perfectly suited to an era when outlandish decals and prominent duck-tail spoilers were in vogue. And while the classic 911 was beloved by everyone who drove it, connoisseurs competed to get hold of a 2.7 RS – arguably the ultimate incarnation of the Eighties 911.
Three years ago, this well-preserved 911 3.2 was transformed into a 2.7 RS replica, when a retrofitted conversion kit was installed by its previous family owners. As such, this car combines the innate desirability and exclusivity of the RS with the proven mechanicals and superior heating/seating of the more widely available 3.2. Its timeless appearance is accentuated by the inclusion of a private registration, with the plates featuring vintage white-on-black lettering to complement the comprehensively refurbished black paintwork. The RS conversion kit extended to replacement front and rear bumpers, duck tail spoiler, bonnet and front wings – the latter are fibreglass, but steel replacements will be supplied as part of the sale.
It’s possible to track every element of this car’s 2.7 RS conversion, since the Porsche repair and service specialist who undertook it recorded every hour allocated to each stage on handwritten job cards. A 15-page document tracks the transformation process, complementing an extensive collection of previous history including 17 services and a 1999 receipt with the instruction “NO DOGS ALLOWED” written in capital letters. Perhaps those iconic Gulf cushions on the back seats were intended to help deter canines from taking a seat?
Conversion kit notwithstanding, this is a time capsule 911 which will delight enthusiasts with its wealth of well-preserved cabin details. Even modern additions like the Bluetooth and DAB-equipped stereo have been disguised by the fitment of a period-style Blaupunkt head unit, which blends seamlessly into the dash below the original lighting buttons.
Steel replacements for fibreglass wings to be sold with car
Porsches shrug off high mileages, so the interior on this 110,000-mile example shows only minimal patina. The rear seats in particular look barely used and even the front seats are in excellent condition; the dash is also in good order with its iconic aluminium-ringed five-dial display. The speedometer is currently not working, although a replacement sender unit will be sold with the vehicle.
The black paint has a number of blemishes and surface imperfections, while the fibreglass front wings would benefit from attention. A pair of steel replacement wings (one new, one used) will be shipped with the vehicle ready for the car’s next owner to install, at which point a respray would be recommened. The wheels and tyres are all in very good condition, and the lime-green Carrera side decals match the accents on the five-spoke alloys.
Speedo not working, but a new sender unit will be provided
The car had all valve oil seals replaced when the engine was out
The 3.2 911 is renowned for its durability, and the current owner describes the car as running faultlessly. The gearbox and suspension are both described as being in good order, with no concerns or untoward noises, while the owner reports the car starts well. A recent engine-out check found no areas of concern, while the immaculate engine bay reflects how diligently this car has been maintained and serviced. image.png2.97 MB
