The Appeal
It was as bold as it was Gold-themed. The fourth generation of Honda’s Gold Wing took the fight firmly to Harley-Davidson, primarily in the form of its ultra-smooth flat-six 1.5L engine. Designed around the principles of smoothness, quietness and power, this was a bike designed to make getting from A to B more comfortable, much easier and considerably more relaxing.
Not that this bike can tell stories of epic trans continental travels. As such it is a very rare gem for collectors. It has covered just 42 miles since the day the first keeper collected it from Motorcycle City in Farnborough and it remains unregistered.
In the subsequent 35 years it has been carefully stored and its light blue metallic paintwork, grey leather and extensive array of fittings present much as the day they left that Hampshire showroom.
Since the vendor acquired the bike he has undertaken a full check over and recommissioning. Work has included replacing the timing belts, fluids, filters and tyres. It is indicative of his approach that he has retained all the original parts.
The bike comes with documentation that would enable it to be road registered. Whether you choose that route or to add this to your display collection, it is a remarkable find for enthusiasts.
The vendor says:
The bike was purchased by a gentleman from the Southampton area in 1990 instead of paying some tax. It seems you could do that then. He purchased the bike from motorcycle City in Farnborough. The owner of Motorcycle City was a friend so the buyer rode the bike home on trade plates hence the 42 miles.
“From what I have been told the bike was then stored correctly hence the condition.
“Since I have owned the bike i have done as much research as possible from numerous sources as to the value etc.
“HOC GB who did the dating certificate put the value around 16k and following a conversation with Dave Partridge from Awningway Goldwings in Telford put the value at around 15k.
“Obviously this is a guess but the bike is one of a kind. Where would you ever find another one.”
