The Appeal
The original Mk1 Golf GTI was, indisputably, brilliant. But, we’ll wager, it is the Mk2 where the genesis of the car’s legend really rests. It car was as agile and engaging as the original, but with a more grown up, usable feel that made it a proper all rounder.
Enthusiasts are split between 16V and 8V models. The 8V delivers a more instant, fizzing experience, and that’s the car we have here. It is a proper find, a highly original, unmodified car that has been in the same family since it was five years old. For the vast majority of that time, it has been the pride and joy of the vendor’s mother.
Finished in ultra rare Jade Green metallic, it presents very well. As an unrestored, original car there are a few minor cosmetic points to note, but nothing that a few light hours wouldn’t rectify.
Beyond the aesthetics, the service history is impeccable. As you’ll see below and in the photos, there is an uninterrupted run of servicing and maintenance. For the last 30+ years, it has returned almost annually to the same local specialist. It received a full service in March 2025, and the MOT runs to March 2026.
This is clearly a much-loved GTI that is in great order and with top notch provenance. It has the makings of a show star, or simply get out and enjoy one of the best hot hatches of the last 40 years.
The vendor says:
“There was something very special about the VW Golf GTI Mk 2 when it came out. I was fortunate to own a 16 Valve version back in the day and driving this car recentl brought the memories flooding back. Finished in her original Jade Green metallic paint the car looks as good as it runs and always attracts comments from the public wherever I take her. The car is completely original and unmodified in any way with her cloth interior, Blaupunkt radio cassette and original wheels all in place.
“She comes with a huge service history including receipts for all maintenance work and parts that has been carried out over all these years which is really quite remarkable to have. If you want an appreciating classic that reminds you just how good these old hot hatches were back in the day, you will struggle to find an example as good as this one.”
