The Attractions
The Jaguar XJ40 was a statement of intent. Developed over a long period of time, it aimed to surpass Mercedes-Benz and BMW by offering a luxury saloon that was both supple and relaxing to drive and technologically innovative.
The success of this project is demonstrated by the fact that this model evolved over the years and remained in production into the new millennium. The first cars were built around the popular and robust AJ6 straight-six engine. From 1990 a 3.2L version was available, with an output of 216 hp.
Around 90 per cent of the XJ40s were produced with automatic transmissions, which were considered more suited to the relaxed style of these cars, making it difficult to appreciate how enjoyable these cars are to drive with a manual gearbox. They are surprisingly engaging and agile. This car therefore represents a valuable opportunity to discover this, being one of the very few examples produced with a manual gearbox.
Painted in Regency Red with black leather interior, this Jaguar has been preserved with great care and is extremely original. The XJ40's typical weak points such as the wheel arches, door sills and rear window and windscreen frames appear to be in excellent shape. The extensive historical documentation supplied testifies to the regularity of the maintenance, and the seller reports that it is a 'virtually one-owner' car.
