The Appeal

The Renault 5 GT Turbo is a true icon of the hot hatch world. Its boxy aesthetics and impressive performance made it a worthy competitor to the likes of the Peugeot 205 GT and the Volkswagen Golf, and depending upon who you ask, completely surpassed them, too.

Now, these cars are amongst the rarest of the European hot hatches and this particular example, first registered in 1991, is a simply superb time capsule to an undeniably more exciting time - and is bound to attract plenty of admiring glances. Carefully restored and recommissioned after five years in storage, the car comes with a wealth of paperwork and will certainly attract enthusiasts of 1990s petrolhead culture.

History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1991
  • Extensively restored and rebuilt between 2005 and 2006
  • Car has reportedly been in storage for the last five years
  • Purchased by the vendor in June 2023 and has undergone some work
  • However, it's done remarkably little and is still in much the same condition
  • Valid MOT until May 2025 with zero advisories
  • Paperwork file includes:
    • V5c document
    • Photographic record of the car’s condition pre-rebuild
    • Invoices for the rebuild and restoration
    • A collection of old MOT certificates
    • Some older invoices, dating back further
    • Latest MOT certificate

The Condition

  • Attractive, boxy lines make this diminutive hot hatch a real headturner
  • All shut lines are tight and correct to our eyes
  • Black trim detailing is in good order with no major faults
  • Light patina to the badges and branding
  • Glasswork and lenses are all sound with no chips, cracks or fractures
  • Fitted with peroid-correct indicators
  • Car is sitting atop some newly powder-coated speedline alloys
  • Shod in a full set of new Yokohama tyres
  • The underneath of the car is free of substantial corrosion
  • Suspension and bushes look clean and well-kept
  • Two minor chips on the paintwork as seen in photos
  • Highly appointed, distinctly 90s interior
  • Grey fabric seats with red patterned detail
  • Period dashboard with inset dials
  • All dials and instruments are clear and easy to read
  • Some light wear here and there, though nothing substantial
  • New music player and speakers fitted
  • OEM gear knob is a little loose
  • New mats all round with new period-correct carpet from Youngtimers in France for front and rear door cards
  • Resin on driver door card bled through when strengthened
  • Other than this, however, it's in fine condition

  • Powered by the sharp 1397cc C1J Turbo i4 engine
  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • ‘Yellow spec’ engine rebuild circa 2006 with less than 20,000 miles done since
  • Fitted with a cooling upgrade kit
  • Full stainless steel exhaust
  • Coilover kit installed
  • Engine bay is in excellent order
  • Vendor has replaced water hoses, the header tank, and a boost hose
  • Carburettor fully refurbished by a specialist
  • New front discs and pads throughout
  • The vendor informs us that the car is running well and boosting brilliantly
