2003 Land Rover Defender 130

Highlights

  • Powered by the revered 2.5L 300Tdi engine
  • Ex-Foley Specialist Vehicles
  • Custom rear utility box
  • Excellent scope for conversion
  • Documented inspection history

The Appeal

The 2003 Land Rover Defender 130 is a sought-after model from the final years of 300Tdi production. While most European Defenders had switched to the Td5, a small number of Rest of World (ROW) 300Tdi examples continued to leave Solihull. Renowned for their simplicity, ruggedness, and ease of maintenance, these late-production 300Tdis are today considered among the most desirable expedition platforms.
This particular example left the factory as a single-cab chassis, believed to have been a cancelled export order, before being acquired by respected coachbuilder Foley Specialist Vehicles. Foley fitted the bespoke insulated rear body still seen today, after which the vehicle is said to have been supplied to the EU Roads & Highways Research Unit for light institutional use.
Showing just 148,541 km (91,000 miles), this 130 is reported as structurally sound and offers excellent scope for conversion into an overland camper, support truck, or commercial utility. Practical highlights include factory air conditioning, heavy-duty suspension, snorkel-ready intake, auxiliary electrics, roof rails, and a Comeup winch. Finished in bright orange over its original Chawton White, it carries the patina of a working Defender.
The vendor notes this vehicle as “an unusual and highly practical 2003 Land Rover Defender 130 ROW 300Tdi, originally supplied by Foley Specialist Vehicles with a bespoke coachbuilt rear body. Low mileage, factory air-conditioning, and the sought-after ROW 300Tdi mechanical drivetrain make this an exceptional base for an overland build, classic rally support truck, or export expedition vehicle. A rare opportunity to secure one of the last production 300Tdi Defenders, combining durability, collectability, and versatility.”

The History & Paperwork

  • EU registration documents are reported as present
  • Left Solihull in 2003 as a single-cab chassis
  • Built to Rest of World specification
  • The vendor advises “ROW-specification 300Tdi Defenders from 2002–2003 were built exclusively for fleet/export customers in limited numbers. They are seldom seen on the market today”
  • Believed to have been a cancelled export order
  • Acquired by respected UK Land Rover coachbuilder, Foley Specialist Vehicles
  • Custom rear body fitted by Foley Specialist Vehicles from new
  • It is said to have then been supplied to the EU Roads & Highways Research Unit, where it was likely to have been used for light institutional use
  • The photos show an odometer reading of 148,541 km (91,000 miles)
  • Vendor has details of Inspection History from 2006 to 2025
  • We’re advised of the following:
Current Technical Inspection
Valid From: 2025-03-05
Valid Until: 2026-03-05
Status: VALID

The Condition

  • Custom coachbuilt insulated rear body by Foley Specialist Vehicles, designed from new
  • Originally factory delivered in Chawton White LRC603, it is now finished in bright orange, with dual side windows, rear access ladder, roof rails, and a rear door
  • Bodywork is reported as “structurally sound with straight panels”
  • Paintwork displays that of a used utility vehicle with imperfections on the majority of panels
  • Damage to the passenger side front wing nose panel
  • Holes left in bonnet from its institutional use
  • Large chip in windscreen
  • 4 Sailun Terramax M/T tyres
  • Genuine Land Rover tow bar
  • The inside of the custom rear utility box has been well used, however it presents excellent scope for conversion into an overland camper, service/support vehicle, or to return to a commercial utility configuration.
  • Standard Defender cab with 2 Denim Twill Vinyl passengers seats + 1 centre jump seat
  • Overall, the cab presents well with some vinyl peel on the driver’s seat base
  • Discolouration to the headlining and sun visors
  • Analogue instrument cluster
  • Single din Kenwood stereo & tape player
  • Standard steering wheel
  • Reportedly to have “cold-blowing A/C”

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre 300Tdi turbodiesel – renowned for simplicity and durability
  • 5-speed R380 gearbox with permanent 4WD and high/low range transfer box
  • Unlike European Td5 models of the same year, the ROW 300Tdi Defenders retained the simpler, fully mechanical injection engine. No ECU, no EGR, no complex electronics, just a proven diesel designed for global serviceability.
  • The absence of sophisticated electronic management also makes these vehicles inherently more resilient to EMP events or electrical surges. With virtually no vulnerable modules or sensors, they are prized by overlanders, off-grid users, and those seeking ultimate reliability in austere environments.
  • Present factory optional extras include: air conditioning, heavy-duty suspension, snorkel-ready intake, auxiliary electrics.
  • Comeup Winch
  • The vendor reports the “engine starts and runs cleanly; drivetrain engages as it should, with no notable slack in the drivetrain”
