The Appeal
The Sprint took the Alfasud DNA and gave it a pretty Giugiaro body. Today these characterful and agile cars are extremely hard to find, not helped by enthusiasts keeping them, understandably, and hang onto them.
Here is a chance to discover one of the best Alfa Romeos of the last 50 years. It is a late-model 1989 Cloverleaf fitted with the 1.7L 118bhp ‘flat four ‘Boxer’ engine. Finished in black, it is largely complete, and we’re told has received lots of welding and new panels in the distant past. The vendor tells us that it starts and runs.
There is still work to do, which the vendor has helpfully described below and is highlighted in the photos. Once done, you get a hugely entertaining coupe rarity built to your exact requirements.
The vendor says:
“Here is a project with fantastic potential, and what a great-looking car she is. Work is needed as described, for the right person, this is a great opportunity to buy into classic Alfa motoring. Belissimo!”

The vendor says:
“According to the vehicle documentation, the Sprint was purchased new from Cubleys of Ainsdale - a well-known Alfa dealership. There are lots of bills showing regular services at Alfa dealerships in the Northwest, such as Cubleys and Westune of Bolton, up to around 84,000 miles. Power-assisted steering was professionally fitted by Westune as the lady owner found the steering too heavy.
“I bought the car in the summer as the opportunity presented itself to develop this exciting project. Selling now as I have a second project and, with 2 restorations on the go, I realised one had to go! The Sprint was in a condition where it didn't run and was without an interior. The carburettors have had professional attention and the fuel lines attended to - she now starts first time and actually sounds rather feisty.”

- The car will benefit from a respray
- Front and rear panels and wings were replaced by Westune some years ago

- Red carpet from Alfa 33 fits perfectly as shown
- Some trim said to be pieces missing
- Roof lining as shown with pop-up sunroof included
- Leather steering wheel
- Full set of seat belts sourced (originally missing)
- Original front screen and screen seal included
The vendor says:
2This project is a mixture of good and bad. At some stage, someone has spent a small fortune on front and rear panels as well as front and rear wings, and this was done at Westune of Bolton by all accounts. She's had welding done to a good standard on the floor and boot floor. Bonnet is virtually rust-free. Doors at first sight appear excellent, but the driver's door will need replacing as the tin worm has had its way at the base. The most pressing area in need of repair is the right passenger floor and sill (see photos), with the scuttle panel rust coming a close second. Further minor rust areas are of a lesser proportion. In summary, mostly great outer panels, but a short stay with a welder is in order - a new full-length sill is included in the sale. Colour-coded mirrors are included. Correct 14" Speedlines are fitted, there's no spare. Tyres will need replacing due to age.
“I bought the Sprint without an interior; it had been removed by someone else for a project. I have sourced an interior which is from a later model Alfa 33. The front seats bolt nicely into the floor, but the 60/40 rear seats will need some modification. The seats are in great condition. I have sourced a red carpet from an Alfa 33 that fits perfectly and is in great condition. I have collected a lot of missing trim, but there are still more to be found - thankfully, parts are available through specialist breakers - happy to provide numbers on request! Roofing lining is thankfully in a beautiful condition, sunroof included! A leather steering wheel is present. I have sourced a full set of seat belts, which were originally missing, along with an original front screen and screen seal.”
The Mechanics
- 1,712cc 118bhp flat four naturally aspirated engine
- 5spd manual transmission
- Adjustable coil-over suspension
- Currently starts for the first time and runs, we are told
- Carburettors have had professionally attended to but still require an overhaul
- Fuel lines have been serviced
- Car is drivable (on private property) we are told
- No water leaks according to the seller
- Minor gearbox leak
- New exhaust system (front to back) included
- Exhaust manifold has a blow due to poor fitting
The vendor says:
“Engine starts first time, the car can be driven (on private property, of course). The carburettors need an overhaul, as might be expected of a car at this age. No water leaks. Minor leak from the gearbox. No fuel leaks as far as I can see. New exhaust front to back, although there is a blow from the manifold due to poor fitting. The car is fitted with coil-overs, which I believe are adjustable.”
