From its inception, the unmistakeable and iconic shape of the 356 was engineered and constructed to make the most of its competition pedigree. Lightweight and agile with impeccable road manners and handling. Whilst other manufacturers were using increased capacity engines to gain performance, Porsche concentrated on lightness and engineering balance to achieve these aims, in many cases out-performing comparative machinery with sometimes twice the horsepower.
It epitomised Ferry Porsches vision when reminiscing about his creation "I saw that if you had enough power in a small car it is nicer to drive than if you have a big car which is also overpowered. And it is more fun!”
This example, chassis 105894 was built in right hand drive form in late 1958 and supplied to South Africa. Originally finished in ruby red though repainted in the current silver many years ago it was bought from South Africa by the current owner about fifteen years ago. Forming part of his eclectic collection of pre and post-war cars it has been used sparingly during his ownership.
The car has recently undergone an extensive programme of works. This includes a full engine rebuild (only about 100 miles since) using a period correct motor by 356 specialist PR Services Ltd in Essex. The front brakes have also been relined and the drums skimmed. This coupled with a gearbox that operates very smoothly makes this a very pleasurable experience.
In an appealing state of being entirely usable but not over restored with impressive build quality and performance it represents great value for money.
