The Heritage Defender was released in 1998 as a special edition released by Land Rover. Their aim was to design and create a Defender that emulated the Defenders of the 1940s, specifically the Series 1. This was achieved by adding a metal mesh-effect front grille, body-colour wheels and wing mirrors, and by also incorporating silver-painted door windscreen hinges. They also decided to provide them in 2 colours; a dark bronze green and a light pastel Atlantic green, with this example coming in the former.
The TD5 engine, of which this car boasts, was introduced in January 1999 as an updated version of the 300tdi. It was the first diesel Defender to be completely controlled by the engine control unit (ECU). The ECU improves drivability by taking the inputs from the clutch, brake and throttle pedal to smooth out gear changes and reduce driveline shunt. With low range selected, the ECU enables Fast Throttle Control (FTC) which widens pedal travel, giving more control over the engine speed in off road and low speed operation.
This Defender is a true testament to these mechanics, running smoothly through its five-speed manual gearbox. Its drive has also been benefitted by the replacement of new rear discs, pads, and calipers, and a recent oil and filter change. This Heritage also has cool features to boast such as;
