Quite a few cars from Mercedes-Benz are modern classics right from the beginning. Every model of the SL series is one. The 4th generation SL was the R129 built from 1989 to 2001.
This SL500 was produced in 1997. It has been my pride and joy, and I will be in utter regret once it is sold, however personal circumstances dictate that I must say goodbye. I have spent nothing short of a fortune in making sure this car is impeccable throughout. Recovering the cost of the restoration alone would be a pipe dream, but I never had the intention to sell.
Finished in a beautiful Imperial red, it can only be described as simply stunning.
I can only appreciate the design was the work of Bruno Sacco, The perfection of its design was recognized early on so much so that in 1990 the R 129 series was the recipient of the Car Design Award.
A Mercedes-Benz SL500 in the R 129 series is the ideal modern classic – individual, but fully suitable for everyday use, and at the same time increasing in value.
Being an SL500, It is equipped with the 306bhp V8, which sounds like a dream. I have done my absolute best to take the fullest care of this gem in my ownership, never ever considering driving it in the rain or even leaving it out in bad weather.
Having only covered 66k miles, it is a truly low mileage example, comparable to no other. Particularly because I have carried out a complete restoration. There is not a spot of rust, not a blemish in the paint, it is in what can only be described as “showroom condition”. I have replaced a multitude of components such as the arms, bushes, links, suspension, brakes, I could go on but it would be to much to list. You could only begin to appreciate my efforts if you view the photographs of the underside. The paint work alone was £8000.
This car is so elegant, notably being the first ever non-British car to be used by the royal family. I could easily argue that there is no better colour combination for an SL500 currently for sale than Imperial red and cream leather.
The R129 was the first Mercedes to feature a fully automatic, hydraulically-operated fabric convertible top, projector lens HID headlamps and an automatic rollbar, which self-deployed in a rollover event.
It has a 5 summer/ winter speed auto box, adaptive damping for better and safer handling at speed (155mph limited for autobahn). Hard Top and wind deflector included stowed in boot. The original alloy wheels are in immaculate condition, as is the spare wheel, are they are wearing brand new tyres.
