Despite its appearance this car has undergone a full mechanical restoration. The engine which is the standard 948 has been rebuilt and slightly modified to include flat top pistons, 295 head, larger carbs, non standard cam, fuel pump and alternator conversion. Similarly, the smooth case gearbox has been fully rebuilt too to include all bearings, shafts and new clutch.
The brakes have been fully overhauled and all lines renewed and converted to discs on the front. The wiring loom has been renewed and converted to RHD with new steering rack ball joints etc. new tyres and tubes. It drives really well and much more solid than the other one I have.
The body work is all steel and despite appearances is absolutely solid and mainly original as seen by the number of spot welds remaking. The only repairs undertaken have been small sections to the bottom or the rear wings behind the wheels, the bottom of the external skins at the door pillars, both these areas are normal rust spots for this model. The floor pans have also had small sections renewed. All repairs have been done in steel. The interior has a RHD fibreglass dash and non original speedo and tacho (To facilitate the alternator conversion), upholstery is old, worn and taped to suit its appearance although all frames etc are good.
I kept the car in this condition and restored it mechanically etc to run it etc in this condition as I wanted the rally rep barn find look, the hardtop was respayed to fit in with its appearance.
To anyone wanting to restore a Frogeye back to the shiny examples you see today then this car is what you are looking for as it needs practically nothing other than stripping, blasting, respaying and assembling with nice new interior all nice easy clean garage work not chasing rust, welding etc.
I recently posted it on a Frogeye forum and had mixed views on the pricing. The price is what it has cost me to date and ideally is what I’m looking to get back. I’m open to realistic offers as it’s probably one of the most unmolested Frogeyes you’ll see. I’ve owned it for several years and will be sad to see it go but moving house so this one and a 45 Ford GPW have drawn the short straws.
The only fault is an intermittent earth fault. Probably due to the fibreglass dash but as it’s intermittent it hasn’t worried me too much. Lucas spotlights not included in sale.
