PRICE REDUCED, SENSIBLE OFFERS NEAR THE ASKING PRICE WILL BE CONSIDERED
For sale here is what has come to be known by my friends as ‘The Mad Max Datsun’
So where to start
This is being sold as a project, but we all know what these are worth done! ££
Its a proper 'holy-grail 1971 240z', it has the correct L24 engine and yes its a manual.
Imported from the USA a few years ago, Customs cleared with all paperwork and title and nova so ready to register as a road legal historic tax and mot exempt vehicle.
As you can see it’s a very distinctive car with the super wide body.
I believe it was built as an IMSA race car in the 70- 80’s. We are unsure if it was raced, but the modifications would suggest it did. More recently it was used as a road car stateside, and was cruising the streets of St Louis Missouri for the last few years.
It was grey inside and out. The last owner distressed the bodywork further as you see it to make it the ultimate rat look Datsun, or RAT-sun.
The steelwork is all pretty good and majority of the lightweight panels are we think Kevlar. It is actually very straight and not as rough as the paint makes it look as this is just for show.
So the car itself is 1971 240z, s30 coupe body and not to be confused with the later 260 and 280s
2. 4l straight six, with manual 4 speed gearbox.
Its pretty heavily modified but does retain the 2. 4l in line 6 running on twin Sus. The engine number would suggest it is the original engine.
Having not met the builder I don’t know what internals it has but would guess not standard. It sounds superb. To me is sounds like it has a scatter cam. from idle the pickup is very rapid and it revs very freely. It has performance headers with straight though 3” s/ s exhaust, a large ally rad, msd ignition, oil and water pre heaters etc etc.
Competition pedal box (all individual) and competition clutch (very heavy duty)
The body is very wide. Its mainly fibreglass/ Kevlar and the whole front end you can pick up with 2 hands, its extremely lightweight. Its all removable on D-Zus fasteners so full on race car.
The wheels are from a Nascar and run 0 offset so look brilliant. Its got discs up front with braided lines throughout and sits on Koni adjustable coil over shocks all round. These are the insert type no the cut and weld it jobs that seems a bit sketchy to me. Camber plates all round too.
Inside its no frills. Full nascar style cage with heavy duty reinforcements. The cage extends forward and rearwards to the strut tops The pair of Kirky lightweight seats and harnesses are surprisingly comfy and are bolted directly to the cage.
Custom pedal box with individual front and rear reservoirs and no servo, with brake bias bar. Removable steering wheel.
The dash looks a bit mental, but I love it. You’ve go a gauge for every conceivable piece of info you could wish for, loads of toggle switches for fans fuel pumps, etc etc, and push button start. It all works.
In the rear its wheel well has been cut out and replaced with a proper fuel cell. An edelbrock 12v pump mounted at the back fuels the twin carbs.
So when I got the car it had some damage to the rear quarter and the door was a bit dented.
We have removed the damaged rear quarter (mainly via drilling out the spot welds) and sourced a replacement rear 1/ 4 and lower sill repair. I also fitted a good secomd hand door. I havnt had a chance to fit these properly yet but photographed clamped in place.
Also have the lightweight panel that rivets over the quarter panel that needs some sanding and repair but easy to do.
Also comes with new rear lower valance as current one has some rust.
Also comes with new air dam type front valance, also needs fitting
Comes with spare rear light also as one was damaged.
Rust wise shes pretty good. There is the odd bit here and there but nothing horrendous, especially for a 240. I know these cars well and it hasn’t gone in all the usual places. Please call if you want to chat about it.
She starts runs and drives, and sounds amazing. This is a rare opportunity to restore a very distinctive 240Z.
Only for sale as I have too many projects, and there are only so many hours in the day. I've had it 2 years or so and it hasn't made it to the top of the priority list yet, so would rather someone else restored and uses it.
Finish and use as is, fully restore, or use as a competitive racer, the choice is yours.
