1989 Honda XRV650 RD03. Built off the popularity of the Paris-Dakar Rally, the XRV650 (RD-03) was launched on the 20th May 1988. Its conception caused somewhat of a sensation, and the model's success would spawn new derivatives right up until the present day.
Tomonon Mogi, the chief designer, wanted the AT to be as close to the factory racing NXR as possible. To this effect, it had a mesh headlight guard; twin aluminium radiators; stainless steel exhaust; ‘auxiliary type’ modular instrument panel; stone guard; quick-release fairly clips; and the HRC ‘tricolore’ colour scheme (as it was handbuilt in the HRC factory).
I bought this bike in France in approx. June 2018. At the time (and now!) sourcing a good RD-03 was next to impossible in the UK so France was the place to look. After a few months of searching and with the help of a French friend I found this one. I shipped it back and registered it. I have a collection of Adventure bikes and this was added to them.
I have used the bike sparingly but always maintained it well. They are so easy to work on it's a pleasure compared to more modern bikes. It was a first time clean pass on it's recent MOT (expires 23/ 6/ 24)
It rides really well, more than enough power and everything works as it should! It's a great bike and rare. I don't have a huge amount of paperwork for it just V5, French owners manual and some MOT certificates.
It is an unrestored, original, 34 year old bike. Based on that it is in excellent condition and probably represents a good investment. I can't think of too much else to say about it but if you need anymore information then get in contact and I'll do my best to help. This model of Africa Twin was built in the HRC factory unlike the later 750 models and as such shares it's birthplace with the Honda RC30. It's still a fantastic tool for days out and in it's HRC colour scheme still attracts much more attention than any of my more modern bikes.
