Description
This 1962 Aermacchi started life as an Ala Verde. Following the introduction of the very competitive Ala D’Oro a number of owners, who could not afford the new bike, converted their bikes to Ala D’Oro specification. Many were campaigned successfully in racing specification. This is such a bike.
I acquired the bike in 2017 and have prepared it for possible classic racing or parade laps. Last year I purchased a brand new electric roller starter for it with new high capacity Exide EK700 70amp AGM battery and this is included in the sale. Age and physical condition have prevented me from campaigning it. It is unregistered and not road legal.
To match Ala D’Oro spec, the engine was upgrade with higher compression, ports polished and race tuned. The carburation has been upgraded to the Ala D’Oro 30mm Del Orto SS1 carburettor with an SS50 remote float chamber. Fitted with a race spec megaphone exhaust with detachable race silencer. Upgraded performance twin plug head. Clutch and gears work well.
The original 17” steel wheels have been replaced with 18” alloy rims as per Ala D’Oro spec. Recently fitted Avon Roadrider MkII 90/ 90X18 tyres are suitable for Classic parade laps. Brakes have been upgraded to Oldani twin leading shoe front and enlarged single leading shoe rear. 30mm Ceriani GP stanchion forks are fitted with a lightweight race mudguard and steering damper. The bike has an Ala D’Oro racing fuel tank with quick release filler and an attractive single racing seat finished in suede and leather. Clip on bars complete with ball end levers The half fairing conceals an SRA Skitsu electronic review counter The modifications include rear set footrests with a modified gear lever operating the four speed close ratio box and a rear brake pedal. There are a number of useful service tools.
The bike is in good mechanical shape, starts easily and rides nicely. The early 250 Aermacchi originally originalIy launched as the Ala Verde with the 57mm stroke by 72mm bore long stroke engine was famous for its bottom end punch and continuous surging power up to its maximum speed. Many competitor bikes developed their power at low revs only. In 1962 Motorcycle magazine Aermacchi test report said - “ The 250 single completely escapes this compromise. It’s beef at low revs would do credit to a 500 single with the same sort of surging power on tap right through the rev range.” Following competitive success of the Ala Verde the company produced the race spec Ala D’Oro. A number of Ala Verdes were converted to the Ala D’Oro replicas by owners who could not afford the new bike. These were campaigned with comparable success. This is one such replica.
To me the bike is like a work of art. I’ve even considered hanging on the wall as a decoration!
The overall condition is very good and would also be a nice classic race bike. It’s just unfortunate that a 80 it’s not a good time to start!!
