Of course it is both Road Tax and MOT exempt here in England, which is where I would like the bike to stay ? I am not up for the hassle of export, I?m sorry.

We know it?s history, and that the 3, 820 miles is genuine.
It was stored (carefully, and correctly) by the previous owner on his friend?s farm as ?a future investment?. That friend just happens to be ex-racer Tony Smith!

When we got it, everything rubber on the bike was either hard or perished, so as part of the re-commissioning, Dad and I replaced everything that was needed.

The engine has never been apart, but when we got the bike, we did a compression test and full leak down test to confirm there were no internal issues.
We also measured cam lift and duration to ensure there is no camshaft wear.

There was some pitting on the carbs, so these were replaced for brand new Amal Premiers (the correct ones, WITH the notched spray tube) ? these are coupled to a Don Pender ?carb gantry? so it is single cable from the genuine Amal twist grip, no horrible 1-into-2 junction box under the tank, and the carbs are perfectly balanced with no sloppiness.

There was some rust on one of the rims (this was a 70s factory recall, that wasn't dealt with) so we replaced both wheels for Excel rims built by the best - Buchanan's in the US.

There was a small amount of rust under the battery, so we replaced the battery tray for a stainless steel pre-MK3 one, which meant we could get a decent sized battery in there, and swap the big black plastic airbox for a stainless pre-MK3 ham can, which we both felt looks much nicer.
The bike has a new Motobatt AGM battery, and has an easy to access CTEK charger socket.

We upgraded the brake master cylinder to a modern 13mm Brembo unit, which in my opinion is the single best upgrade you can do.
At the same time, we swapped the front brake from left to right, purely because we felt it looked nicer.
The calipers were rebuilt with new seals, and the caps and pistons were swapped for stainless. The pads are new Ferodo platinum front and rear.
We also added a stainless braided line (in lieu of the rubber hoses and bundy) to get rid of any sponginess.
New drilled discs have also been added.
The result of these brake upgrades is brilliant, and the classic-bike look isn't ruined.

The switchgear is modern (from Colorado Norton Works) so there are no question marks around the reliability ? they are perfect.

Ignition is dealt with by a Tri-Spark electronic ignition unit ? their advance/ retard and engine idle and engine stabilisation circuits are the best out there for electric start bikes ? no fear of kickbacks, so good protection on the electric start mechanism.

There is a dual output single coil again from Colorado Norton Works ? super reliable, and no crushed coils here ? the cNw bracket looks really clean and tidy.

The charging system has been totally overhauled. High output three phase Lucas stator and new rotor (the magnets on the original had got a bit tired)
This is perfect for electric start bikes, that are permanently charging a depleted battery.
Regulator/ Rectifier is a Shindengen SH775 series-type (open-type) unit.
This takes the load off the stator when the battery is charged (so you will not burn out your stator).
The SH775 does not overcharge the battery, and is the best of the best.
It?s coupled with a ICM charge warning light rather than the poor factory warning light assimilator ? so you get decent information about charging, and the state of the battery.

The starter motor has been rebuilt from a Harley Prestolite ? so has four brushes and four coils, making it much more powerful. The cables have been upgraded to much heavier gauge, so it can pull more power, helping starts on a cold day.

New sprag and new uprated anti-backfire device finish the upgrades on the starter side.

Stainless braided oil lines (to the head) and fuel lines have been added.

A Jim Comstock sump plug reed breather has been added ? this is far superior to the factory ?solution?. It takes the load off the seals and guarantees they won?t blow out when you try to start a wet-sumped bike (if you have left it for months without starting it) ? it also makes the bike noticeably more free revving.

This bike is stunning and wants for nothing ? however, as you?ve read above this is NOT a concourse winning trailer queen. There are lots on non-original, modern upgrades that make this a decent rider, not a show pony.
