Under pressure
Volvo aggressively promoted the 740 Turbo Intercooler in the United States as a sports car with utility value. With slogans like "How to survive your midlife crisis. With dignity." or "A collector's item that you can drive every day", the Swedish automaker made it clear that the 700 series turbos were anything but boring and sluggish. In a TV commercial, a Turbo station wagon competed against a Porsche 944. The message behind it: “To a radar gun, both look the same.” After Volvo introduced turbocharged engines for the first time with the 200 series, the new, boxy model entered the race noticeably more confidently and thus paved the way for the subsequent sporty R models.

This Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooler 2. 0 with almost 160 cat-free horsepower rolled off the assembly line at the Belgian Volvo factory. It was first owned by an older gentleman in Finland (first registered on March 25, 1987 in Pori) and with 92, 000 kilometers should be considered barely broken-in if you look at the average mileage of other examples - which usually don't even have a turbo. Very few of them were ordered and even fewer survived. Its extroverted appearance in particular makes it rare: the outside is untypically Volvo in bright red and the inside is black with partial leather and the high-quality velor that Volvo advertised as "noble velor".
There are also features such as a Volvo sound system, electric windows at the front, seat heating, fog lights, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, mechanical lumbar supports at the front, large electric sunroof, automatic air conditioning and a level control from Monroe because of the 1. 5 ton trailer hitch. Technically, after around ten years of service with only short trips, I gave the turbo brick a comprehensive service with many new parts for over 3000 euros. The work included the brake system, power steering pump, air conditioning, the exhaust (although I really wanted to keep the rare rear silencer with two pipes) and the tires. A timing belt change including a new water pump was also carried out. Of course, at the end there was a full TÜV inspection including an H certificate.
I then had a few minor signs of age removed and gave it extensive detailing. The car is largely in its original paint. Accident or rust damage is not apparent. To avoid the hassle of polishing in the future, the Volvo will be handed over with a ceramic seal. If desired, detailing of the subfloor with wax sealing is also possible for an additional charge.
Then there is actually nothing left for the new owner to do other than carefully bring the old Swede back in after a long period of abstinence from driving and keep it in this great condition.
Okay, we have one notable flaw: The roof lining, which is gradually sagging in the rear area, should perhaps be addressed at some point - a typical problem with this model.
