The appeal
The first series 1750GTV is considered by Alfa enthusiasts to be the Bertone coupe to have, with a subtle improvement in the bonnet line and front end design, free-revving twin cam engine developing 118 hp, and “flying buttress” seats allowing maximum use to be made of its deft handling.
This particular UK market RHD first series 1750GTV was supplied new in Johannesburg South Africa as a full import, remaining on the Highveld for 47 years before importation to France. Dry climate origin and the 4900 miles run in the last 26 years always on the road, always garaged, are big plusses for this car’s condition.
When release of the 2000GTV was rumoured, Alfa SA fitted the remaining stock of 1750GTV’s with Campagnolo alloy wheels to boost the run out sales. Owners of earlier cars and the racing fraternity retro-fitted these wheels due to their svelte appearance and a saving of unsprung weight of 2. 2kg per wheel. The current owner has been meticulous about maintaining authenticity and proper maintenance and operation of this car, particularly the 3 minute warm up at idle. The only modifications present when purchased in 1998 were Koni Shock absorbers, the Campagnolos, and adjustable front suspension top links. The upholstery is unrestored original and the rest of the car was subjected to a nut-and-bolt restoration and an exterior repaint immediately prior to present ownership.
“Volare” describes the driving experience, starting readily, acquitting itself well amid modern traffic with flair and distinction, never failing to receive gestures of approval from the driving public. A beautifully presented classic sports coupe “on the button”, so seize the rare opportunity to add this seldom offered tribute to Alfa Romeo's craftsmanship and creativity to your collection.
