Due to an imminent loss of space I am selling my top of the range (when new) 1976 BMW R90S in smoke grey paintwork. I have owned this bike since March 2011 and it is now showing 80, 275 miles on the clock. It has matching engine and frame numbers and is in good, unrestored condition.
Most R90Ss have been restored and the new paintwork generally does not look quite right to me. This one is original with an attractive patina, which is the look I prefer.
It is curently fitted with a set of the later type panniers and frames. Unusually these pannier frames accept the later mono shock panniers. They provide a more secure locking system so I have been using these rather than the original earlier type. I have the originals available. The currently fitted panniers are a slightly rough working pair. They are lockable with the key provided but one of the pannier lids has repaired stress cracks. Solid but visible.
The bike underwent a mechanical overhaul when I bought it and has only done about 1000 miles since then. Family commitments and other bikes mean that this one has not had much use.
At that time it had new piston rings fitted. The cylinder bores were still at a standard size with visible honing marks so perhaps they were replaced at some point.
Other works undertaken included:
Braided front brake hoses
A new starter motor
A new starter relay
A new clutch including new flywheel bolts
New condensor and ignition points
New alternator brushes
A new steering damper
It has a recent gel type Odyssey battery
As I was planning to keep the bike I very recently fitted it with high spec emulsion gas YSS shock abosrbers (RZ362). These currently cost £500 and have improved the handling and ride considerably.
These airhead BMWs are the most reliable classic bikes and are still a viable workhorse and a practical touring machine. There are various established parts suppliers in the UK so keeping them running does not involve sourcing rare parts. It runs and rides well but it has not been used much recently so might benefit from a tune up.
Road tax free and MOT exempt as it is over 40 years old.

It comes with the original owners manual and many old MOTs and most tax discs from 1980.
