Daimler became part of Jaguar Cars Limited in 1960, and the name was not only preserved but strengthened. The Daimler Sovereign was launched in 1966 as the enhanced version of the standard Jaguar and marketed as a more discreet alternative to the equivalent Rolls-Royce and Bentley, with an appeal, in a uniquely British way, as the motorcar of choice for the successful individual that appreciated refinement and presence without the public, or private, accusations of ostentation. In 1979, Jaguar Cars used Pininfarina to revise the design for the XJ6 Series 3, which incorporated stylish and subtle upgrades, as well as modifications to pacify the US legislation for Federal bumpers.
Many of the features offered as 'extras' on other models in the Jaguar/ Daimler range were included as standard equipment in the Vanden Plas models. These included fully automatic air-conditioning, tinted glass, chromium waist mouldings and coachline, stereo radio/ cassette player with 4 speakers, electric aerial, leather exclusive Vanden Plas style upholstery, front and rear seat headrests, inertia reel rear seatbelts, luxurious rugs to all passenger footwells, Asian burr walnut veneered facia and door fillets, twin front foglights, quartz halogen headlamps, electric remote control for both door mirrors, adjustable reading lights, headlamp wash/ wipe and front seat electric adjustment. Extra cost items on the 4. 2 were an electric sunroof, spoked alloy wheels, trip computer on the redesigned central console and 'Power-Lok' limited slip differential, all of which were standard equipment on this Van den Plas 4. 2 litre.
This particular example has an electric sunroof, Kent alloy wheels, and trip computer. Well cherished by its 4 keepers and believed to have always been garaged.
