The car was designed in Italy by Alfa Romeo, with the support of Maserati (which handled mainly production readiness and the adaptation of the project to production, which is semi-handcrafted). The Milan-Modena partnership also drew on the know-how of Dallara, which supplied its own F1-derived patent as well as consultancy for the realisation of the carbon fibre monocoque: this is a novel project, created specifically for the 4C, which has no links to other vehicles and which had never found application outside competition; moreover, for Dallara this solution marks the first application of this patent to a vehicle intended for series production, as it had previously limited itself to prototypes or supercars. Although at first the trade press reported a structured collaboration between the Emilian company and Alfa Romeo (there was even talk of a Dallara-badged 4C version), this ended shortly after the patent was granted and the consultancy for the monocoque design.
For the carbon fibre monocoque a dedicated production plant was opened, reclaiming a disused facility in Airola; production takes place by hand in an area of about 38, 000 m² by the company Tecno Tessile Adler, of the Adler Group.
Final assembly takes place at Maserati’s Modena plants, which had previously hosted the assembly lines for the 8C Competizione. Painting is the only operation that takes place outside the Modenese factory; after it the headlamps are fitted, 40 km of testing are run for each car, and the final checks and operations are carried out.
