Suzuki GS550E – 1979 – Historic Vehicle – Much Loved, Easy Fixer-Upper
For sale is my 1979 Suzuki GS550E – a cherished classic that’s been in my care since 2016. Family life has taken priority, so it’s been off the road for a few years, but always kept covered and treated with respect. Now it’s time for someone else to give it the attention it deserves.
As an historic vehicle, this bike benefits from no MOT or road tax requirements and is exempt from ULEZ charges – a real plus for city riders or collectors.
It hasn’t run in a few years simply due to lack of use, not because of any known issues. Before being stored, it ran beautifully and was always kept in good working order. Mileage stands at 48, 000, and this 1979 model is part of the early generation of Suzuki’s strong, reliable GS line.
I’ve owned it since 2016, and over that time it’s been well cared for with regular maintenance. I’ve kept lots of bills and receipts documenting the work done over the years. Wherever possible, I’ve used genuine Suzuki parts, even down to nuts and bolts – often at considerable expense – to keep things as authentic and original as possible.
The front shocks have been recently replaced with Hagon units, giving a smoother ride and better handling while staying true to the bike’s classic style.
There’s minimal rust on the chrome – just light surface rust in a few areas, nothing structural or heavy. However, during storage, the handlebar was accidentally bent and will need to be replaced. The throttle, brake lever, and reservoir were unaffected and remain intact.
The bike is largely standard, with only a couple of subtle changes: LED indicators fitted and a smaller custom front mudguard. Included in the sale are the original parts: the original front mudguard (with matching paintwork) and the original factory indicators.
It’s a reluctant sale, but I’d rather see it being ridden and enjoyed than sitting unused. It’s a fantastic candidate for a light restoration – a straight, honest bike with loads of character, and only minor work needed to get it back on the road.
