Description

I finally found my perfect early Series Land Rover last year - restored by previous fastidious owner who maintained it impeccably. Not an over restored trailer exhibit but rather a proper useable Series 2 with all of the correct early features. She (Minnie) was registered in 1958, one of the first with the 2286cc petrol engine.

Original chassis - The chassis number was found under many layers of paint and corresponds to the plate on the bulkhead.

For her age it is in very good condition, fully roadworthy and ready to be driven.

Selling because I have recently been suffering from sciatica and can only now drive an automatic. Used by the previous owner of 14 years – an active member of the Series 2 Club- for steam fairs, tractor ploughing and classic car shows etc, and.

Good interior, deluxe seats, 2 Smiths heaters, soundproof matting, door cards, bench seats in the rear.

Doors and door tops are rust free, sound original chassis, has had previous repairs to a good standard (rear quarter chassis/ cross-member and out riggers replaced). Excellent condition bulkhead which was imported from Australia when restored by previous owner.

Wiring loom was also replaced by previous owner with cloth covered replacement.

Engine runs smoothly and quietly, very good starter. Has original S2 gearbox, which doesn't have synchromesh on 1st & 2nd gear. Easy enough to drive with a little practice at double de-clutching.

Road springs are good - new Monroe gas shocks recently fitted.

Brakes good - it has a long wheelbase type front axle fitted which has bigger brakes and improves stopping.

Has a watertight fairly recent Exmoor Trim rear tilt and is in good condition in the rear. Fold down windscreen and removable door tops for that safari look in the summer. There is a spare wheel. Has inertia reel seatbelts installed. Rear bench seats making it a seven-seater.

Bad points - the Michelin XCL tyres have plenty of tread but are now beginning to look their age and will need replacing at some point. Has a few oil leaks which come as standard on a Séries 2. It has been resprayed in Dove Grey (a series 1 colour) on the outside but is still mid grey on the inside. There are a few patches of filler showing through the paint now in some lights. There is a history file with old MOTs and receipts. It is the photo of a Series 2 on the Wikipedia Land Rover page - at the time it was mid grey with a Blue Canvas tilt. The car seems to have been in constant use since 1958 - a good sign! Once you are used to it, it is amazing fun to drive and will go anywhere up even the step est of inclines. With the Canvas good rolls up or removed in the summer it’s the perfect car for ferrying friends or family around. Built to last in Solihull it is versatile and durable!
