The car was purchased in October 2022 from an enthusiast who had bought and dry stored the car for approximately years with the view to one day restore the car as they were becoming increasingly rare. Circumstances changed due to loss of storage and the car was advertised for sale. I bought it immediately knowing the rarity of the car and set up about restoring the car.
The car first went through a one year total mechanical and underside nut and bolt restoration where all the suspension, engine and gearbox, brake pipes, fuel pipes, fuel tank were removed and the underseal stripped right back to metal. We then assessed the car and had any rust or rot cut out, new metal fabricated and welded back in. Once the car's underside was rust free. The whole underside and wheel arches were painted in epoxy primer. After this the car was treated with Gravitex and then painted over in the body colour- Toyota 041 white.
We had all the suspension components cleaned, de-greased and powder coated. A full "Superpro" polyurethane suspension Bush kit was fitted and new hardware was used where possible. A new full BC V1 VA suspension coilover kit (front top adjustable) was fitted, new Kunifer brake pipes fitted with braided front and rear brake flexi pipes. The front and rear Brake Calipers were fully reconditioned with new seals and painted. New EBC Front and Rear Brake discs were fitted with "Yellow stuff" brake pads. New fuel pipes were fitted, and the fuel tank was inspected and tested and repainted with a new fuel pump installed. New rear wheel bearings were fitted.
The steering rack was removed and reconditioned and the steering UJ joint was reconditioned.
The car was sent to Tony Banks exhausts in Leeds, and was treated to a new stainless steel full exhaust system based on the original exhaust and silencers design.
The labour cost of the above works excluding parts and exhaust system was £3000.
Thousands of pounds was spent alone just in parts and hardware.
The next stage was to assess the engine and gearbox. When I purchased the car, there was a dyno graph that was in the car and that showed a very healthy 129. Bhp with ft torque. We knew the car had not been driven for years and so compression checked the engine which was very high across all 4 cylinders. This led us to believe it may have had some bottom end work carried out previously so we left it alone. The gearbox on the car was also a JDM version 5 speed and its gearing positions were different to a UK 5 speed. Again this was left alone and just a new ADL Blueprint clutch kit fitted with a new clutch slave cylinder.
A new Gates timing belt with a new waterpump and thermostat was fitted. The valve covers were reconditioned, a new set of Magnecour ignition leads, new distributor cap and Rotor, new spark plugs and original air filter were fitted. We also replaced the water temperature sensor, Throttle position sensor, and did a full coolant change using Toyota red 4 life coolant.
Next the full body was stripped down, the doors, bootlid, bonnet, Sunroof panel, and all glass including the front windscreen removed. Any rust was cut out and replaced with new metal. The panels were fully prepared for paint and the car was painted in epoxy primer and then in 041 Toyota white. The alloy wheels were stripped and powder coated and new Toyo Proxes tyres fitted all round.
This Toyota is by far the best example out there and was built to keep with a no expense spared build. The car will last a lifetime if maintained and looked after with care and will only increase in value and rarity.
The car is being sold due to unforseen circumstances and I will be sad to see it go and after having spent 3 years restoring the car.
