Description

MG TD (1953) / British Racing Green / TD22279

The car is an original right-hand drive (UK Home Mkt) model, built 28th November 1952.

I have spent the intervening 2 years since I purchased the car getting the engine up and running, refurbing all the carbs, fuel lines, brake shoes and cylinders – and trimming the dash and interior. Its still running with positive earth wiring and now has a new entire loom. I stripped down the chassis (entirely rust free thanks to its US trip) and painted it in black two-pack chassis paint. It also benefits from a spin off oil filter conversion, new exhaust system from the last owner. Large folder of receipts !

Here’s a list of the new parts / work conducted under my ownership:
• Refurbished and retrimmed dash
• Retrimmed rear luggage compartment
• New wiring loom
• Battery & leads
• SU electronic Fuel Pump
• Fuel Tank & paint
• Fuel tank sender and seal
• Starter motor (original available)
• Rear suspension & axle refresh including rear main seal, pinions and bushes (incl. Girling shocks)
• Starter solenoid switch
• New front and rear brake shoes and cylinders – and brake line switch
• Chrome fuel cap
• Door hinge
• Wing mirror
• Door Striker plate & wedge x 2
• Door latch & gasket x2
• Flasher unit relay
• Door straps
• Magnetic oil drain plug

Mechanically the car is now in great order and happy motors at 50 mph.

The bodywork is great from 12 feet away and retains what may be its original paint and patina which I think is half its character. There are paint and bodywork blemishes – please don’t expect a concourse show winner.

There is a new tonneau cover (never fitted), original hood sticks, frame, side windows and older hood which I have never tried to fit as it never goes out in the rain ! Many spares also.

Located near Maidenhead, RG42 – viewing welcome and necessary – new project means I need the room. The car is an original right-hand drive (UK Home Mkt) model, built 28th November 1952.

The factory production record shows original fitted engine as XPAG/ TD2/ 22769

At some unknown point in its history the original engine was replaced with a late 1953 engine XPAG/ TD2/ 30283 which according to the MG T-Series Register folks it does not appear to have been originally fitted to a production line TD. When and why this transition was made is not clear. However - the engine is now in fine fettle, starts easily thanks to new starter & pulls strongly without issues. Gearbox is original and smooth changing (as much as these can!)

The first recorded TD register record (a very old one!) showed the car as being with an owner in Chipperfield, Herts and with UK Regn No. HMO 282

At some point prior to 1977 it was exported to the US as there is a record in a US TD Register listing of the car being in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. Indeed I have the USA MG Owner’s Plinth as a record of its time oversees.

In 2015 it was repatriated back to the UK and assigned its current UK registration number. It was purchased from a dealer (receipt available) by a retired chap from Stroud and driven home to be stored for the next 7 years until I purchased it as a non-runner from his estate in Gloucestershire in June’23.
