Having completed an extensive restoration of my 1990 205 GTI 1. 6 Special Edition to an excellent standard, the time has come for somebody else to enjoy it.
Rare Special Edition 1. 6 Phase 1. 5 With Factory Sunroof, Power Steering, Full Grey Leather Interior & Contrasting Grey Carpets.
At huge expense & and a great deal of time, effort & attention to detail, I set off on my mission to restore this great little car to its former glory back in May 2021 albeit the car was in daily use up until that point.
I purchased the car from a lady who had owned it since 2006 & had used it as her daily transport for 15 yrs & although she had kept up routine maintenance, the car was of course now 31yrs old & naturally required more & more as the years went on therefore reluctantly she made the decision to part company & purchase something more modern.
Below is an overview of the full work carried out / parts replaced / reconditioned etc...
BODYWORK & ENGINE BAY:
The car was carefully taken apart with as much as every single screw & fixing individually bagged & labelled. All glass was removed including complete sunroof, as were all exterior trims & the engine & gearbox. Some light welding was required before being sent off to the bodyshop for prep & full re-spray including the engine bay. (full photographs are available on request) Following the re-spray the paintwork was protected with a polymer silicone based sealant to retain its shine.
INTERIOR:
All seats were sent away to a professional automotive trimming company, stripped & re-covered in leather with bolsters replaced at the same time. Finished with the correct red stitching, the finished article is nothing short of stunning, by far the most expensive part of the restoration at a cost of £3000 !!
All door cards & carpets are original & are in near perfect condition as is the headlining & dashboard with none of the common cracks that so many of the cars of this era suffered with.
ENGINE, GEARBOX & TRANSMISSION:
The gearbox was sent away & rebuilt whilst the engine was cleaned down & the following parts replaced:
- Engine oil & filter
- Air filter
- Spark plugs
- H. T leads
- Distributor cap & rotor arm
- Oil sump & gasket
- Oil temp sensor
- Rocker cover gasket
- Clutch cable & fork kit
- Idle control valve rebuilt
- Timing belt & water pump
- Coolant flange
- Coolant hoses & clips (inc metal one in o/ s front wing)
- Cooling fan thermo switch
- Cooling fan resistor
- Starter motor
- Alternator
- Driveshafts
- Air intake scoop
- Rear exhaust box
UNDERSIDE:
Rear subframe removed, stripped down, shot blasted & powder coated. Boot floor 'Dry Iced, zinc primer applied & finished in high quality grey stone chip. All fuel lines replaced (metal & rubber) - All photos available on request.
BRAKES / STEERING / SUSPENSION / WHEELS & TYRES
The following parts have been replaced / rebuilt:
- Front brake calipers rebuilt (Big Red)
- Front brake discs & pads (inc anti rattle shims)
- Rear shoes & cylinders
- Handbrake cable clips
- Rear flexi hoses
- Drums skimmed, balanced & powder coated
- Rear shock absorbers
- Rear subframe mounts
- Front shock absorbers
- Front springs
- Front hubs powder coated
- Wish bones powder coated
- Front wheel bearings
- Rear wheel bearings
- Track rod ends
- Anti roll bar drop links
- All four tyres (Matching Falken)
- All wheels inc spare professionally refurbished with diamond cut edge & met grey centres.
HOW DOES IT DRIVE ?
As you'd certainly hope & expect considering the time, money & effort that has gone in to this car that it would drive superbly, and that it certainly does....
I promised myself that when I'd finished it I would take it on a road trip to Cornwall as a celebration that I had fulfilled my mission to restore a 90's hot hatch - So on 26th April 2025 I set off from Essex to St Ives in the 205 & I am pleased to say that the car took it entirely in its stride, completing over 1000 miles in just over 7 days entirely without fault !
I have thoroughly enjoyed the 4 year journey I've been on with this car but the time has come to let somebody else enjoy all the hard work that has gone in to it & I hope that the next owner will cherish it as it truly deserves.
Private plate 'G16PUG' is included in the sale.
M. O. T to Feb 2026 with no advisories. The 205 comes with an extensive history file including all original owners manuals, stamped service booklet, old tax discs, M. O. T certificates, folder full of receipts for work carried out, photographic evidence of the restoration work carried out throughout my ownership & of course the V5 in my name.
The car began it's life in North London on 01/ 04/ 1990, supplied by TAD Peugeot (TAD Autosales Ltd) in Finchley & appears to have remained in that area until around 1997.
According to the previous owner & various supporting paperwork in the history file, it then made it's way to Crawley in West Sussex & was then subsequently sold by a dealer named 'Just GTI's' of Horsham in 2006 to the lady i purchased the car from & then spent the next 15yrs of it's life in Kings Lynn in Norfolk.
