VW Mk 1 Cabriolet - PROJECT
This car has been in my family since acquired from the original owner in the early 2000s. It has covered just over 150k. Had regular maintenance when in London and since in Devon (in recent years) it had a major service (over £1k) in 2023 which included new front suspension parts (shock absorbers/ springs).
The tyres are in good order, it very recently (last Autumn) had new front brake discs and pads. The engine is a 1. 8 which has had regular oil changes and consumes very little oil.
The bodywork is in generally good condition - no rust of any note and the underneath is good. The paintwork is original and cleans well; I have some correct paint for improvements. The hood is the original and has no tears or apparent wear, and I found it good. The upholstery needs a good clean and a little repair to the driver's seat. Carpets fine but again, they need a good clean. All in all the car would benefit from fairly straightforward restoration.
Until the problem detailed below arose, I was using the car on a daily basis and it had been very reliable. It is now sitting at my local garage and the purchaser will need to collect it from there.
There is a V5 and a set of keys, and a few spare parts.
THE PROBLEM
On 12th December 2024 the car suffered quite sudden water loss/ overheating and it is thought it has a blown head gasket. It blew the oil pressure plug on the end of the cylinder head also. Either the head will need a thorough repair or (maybe more simply) replacement. Unfortunately I am not in a position to do the work so this is a good opportunity for a home mechanic to do some rewarding restoration. This is the classic VW Cabriolet. Compared to today's cars, it is relatively simple to work on and is a popular model for lovers of classic cars. Last summer it was looking very good after detailed cleaning/ polishing and it will not take a lot of work to have it looking presentable again. I particularly enjoyed driving it with the top down.
