FOR SALE – £6, 999 – MK1 VW CADDY PICKUP – 1992 – AAZ POWER – RESTORED & RAREVehicle History in My Ownership
This Mk1 VW Caddy has had a remarkably simple and traceable ownership journey for a vehicle now over 30 years old.
It was first registered in 1992 and remained with its original owner for nearly three decades. From what I can gather, he kept it as a practical workhorse, and based on the condition of the original chassis and panels, he looked after it well. The truck stayed largely unmodified and was never messed around with during that time — a rare find when so many Caddys have passed through multiple hands and seen all kinds of DIY “improvements.”
In around 2020, the Caddy was purchased by a small specialist dealer. To the best of my knowledge, they intended to restore it but never got it roadworthy or registered in their name for long. It sat dry-stored and was never driven or modified.
I bought it shortly after that, making me the third registered keeper (though in terms of meaningful ownership, I consider myself the second real owner). I acquired it as a solid, straight project with excellent bones — just in need of modernising and reworking to bring it back to life. That’s exactly what I set out to do.

My Work on the Vehicle (2021–2024)
Since then, I’ve overseen a comprehensive restoration and rebuild, including:
A full bodywork stripdown and repaint in slate grey cellulose matte with a subtle white fleck.
A full drivetrain swap: replacing the original 1. 6D with a period-correct and highly desirable 1. 9 AAZ turbo diesel from a Mk3 Golf.
Major power upgrades, including a front-mount intercooler, AEM water-methanol injection, modified fuel pump internals, a cone filter, and more.
Suspension, brakes, and steering all rebuilt or upgraded: flipped rear axle, MTS coilovers, G60 front brakes, Mk4 Golf rear discs, braided brake lines, new arms and bushings.
Interior reworked and soundproofed with upgraded audio, fresh seals, rare sliding rear window, and numerous comfort improvements.
I've also taken great care to document the process with hundreds of photos and detailed notes, all of which will be passed on to the next owner.
This truck has been my reliable weekend runabout, occasional workhorse, and car show talking point. It’s even been used for regular 100+ mile commutes without a hiccup — outperforming some far newer vehicles I’ve owned in terms of reliability.
I’m proud to say that in my ownership, this Caddy has never once broken down or failed to start, even in winter. It’s lived indoors, been serviced properly, and treated with the kind of attention that a future classic deserves.
