I've owned my Mk1 VW Caddy for about 13 years now, and I can honestly say it’s been one of the most rewarding (and occasionally maddening) projects of my life. What started as a scruffy, rust-dappled old workhorse was fully restored around 10 years ago —and then some.

The Restoration
About 10 years ago, I tore it down and gave it the restoration it deserved. Every panel, every bolt, minimal welding was required but cut and removed rust. The body is still solid and impressively rust-free (a miracle in itself for a Caddy of this age). I painted the bed with 2k paint and overcoated in a robust bed paint thats still holding strong today—no holes, no crust, just solid metal you could eat your dinner off.

The Heart Transplant – VR6 Swap
The original 1. 6D with 4speed gear box can come with it agreed within the sale. For a bit of extra grunt I swapped this out for a mk3 golf vr6 engine. The mounts were from retrofication, the wiring was adapted to keep the original dash. And the brakes were upgraded on the front to mk1 gti’s

Interior Bits – Comfort Meets Style
Inside, I’ve fitted a pair of Recaro seats the side of the drivers seat has started to split and the rest of the cabin keeps its old-school charm but with a few thoughtful upgrades here and there. Still smells like an old VW, but with a bit of petrol and leather mixed in – no air freshener needed :P

Unique Touches
The tailgate is servo-actuated—opens at the press of a button. Bit over the top? Maybe. Cool as hell?
Then there’s the BBS front lower lip bumper—an ultra-rare piece I managed to get my hands on during the restoration. It’s some paint peeling but makes it stand out against others.
The rear axel has been flipped and coil overs added up front. The vr6 engine sits relatively low so the sump has been re-enforced.

Final Thoughts
I drove it to my wedding a few years ago and sat it at the venue with the bed filled with beer, but since then it has not been driven and has been sat on the drive. I’ve started it frequently to let it warm up and keep everything ticking but over winter the starter/ solenoid stopped working.
I intended to get it back up and on the road this summer but have a second son on the way and a house renovation which is taking priority. Its now sat for half a year on the drive and needs a bit of love to get it back running and on the road. It requires trailering away and is sold as seen.
Can negotiate a set of Compomotive ms 13” wheels, original 1. 6d engine and 4spd gearbox with the sale if wanted.
