Description
E596MEG was first registered on 4th February 1988, having rolled off the
production line at BMW’s Dingolfing factory the previous November - the
penultimate month of E28 production. As one of the last of the E28 line,
she represents the closure of that chapter of BMW’s boxy, mid-size saloon era.
Originally sold by Sycamore of Cambridge,
‘Meg’ still wears her dealer
sticker with pride - a small trace of her first home. She spent her life in
East Anglia before I found her for sale in Bury St Edmunds in April 2013.
‘Meg’ is a “lux” spec model - a specification BMW introduced in late 1986 to give the ageing E28 a little more sparkle against fresher rivals like
Mercedes’ W124 which was released in the same year.
Standard fit luxuries included central locking, power windows, front fog
lamps, power steering, a tilt-and-slide sunroof, and deep-pile velour upholstery.
Under the bonnet lies the M10 1. 8 engine. Its trusty chain-driven design
now enhanced with fuel injection. It’s no speed machine, but the
transformation over the old carburettor unit is significant - smooth, willing
and perfectly usable in modern traffic. On the motorway,
‘Meg’ settles into
a relaxed stride returning comfortably north of 30mpg on a run.
During my ownership the bodywork has been restored, complete with the
correct period pin stripes that return a touch of 1980s character. The
arches will soon need attention again - such is the fate of E28s - but overall she is extremely presentable and mechanically she has always been kept in fine health, serviced regularly and attended to whenever the smallest issues have arisen - all of which is backed up by a ring binder full of invoices. A stainless exhaust system was fitted in 2022 which carries a lifetime guarantee.
The car is MOT’d up to March 2026.
Beyond the road, ‘Meg’ has also led a life as a car featured in fashion
shoots for magazines and websites, and has made appearances on film
sets - her sharp lines and period charm lending a distinctive presence Wherever she is placed.
Offered with the sale are a number of spares including a section of chrome bumper, original mud flaps and a spare set of steel wheels with period 1980s BMW trims.
