Model History -
Launched in 1983, the XT600 Tenere 34L model was an instant hit.
Lightly revised for the 85 model year, the bike was still kick start only.
However at the 1985 Paris motorcycle show Yamaha launched the heavily revised XT600 Tenere 1VJ. The new model had many improvements inc a revised air box, an engine oil cooler and at last an Electric start.
The 1VJ Tenere won itself many fans and was very popular as an expedition bike, as well as being used on the Dakar events. It is probably the best of the Tenere models.
Strangely for the 1988 model year Yamaha released the XT600 Tenere 3AJ, which was much heavier ( 13 kgs ) and had an easily damaged plastic nose cowl, heavy twin headlights, large clocks, heavy steel front subframe etc.
The 1VJ Teneres profile has been raised considerably by “ Itchy Boots “ who is currently on a world trip on one of these iconic bikes.
This very original low mileage matching numbers example was factory built in blue / yellow and is in need of restoration. Very few were sold new to sports bike mad Britain and this example is one of a handful of survivors.
