Description:

The Oxford Traveller was a practical estate car variant of the popular Morris Oxford, produced by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) from the early 1950s through the 70s. Based on the Pininfarina-designed Oxford saloon, it featured an extended rear body with a large tailgate, offering extra luggage space and versatility for families and businesses alike. The Traveller combined the Oxford’s dependability, fashionable looks and smooth ride with the convenience of an estate, however it is a very rare sight on today’s roads and show circuits thanks to their popularity in Banger Racing – Actually a testament to their sturdiness!

This particular car is a Series VI, produced in 1967. Originally supplied from Beadles of Dartford, Kent, it was then sold by Beadles again less than a year later to the second owner, from whom the current owner’s father purchased it from in early 1990. The vehicle was renovated cosmetically at this time, but has never been fully restored. While having benefited from previous reconditioning, the vehicle is believed to retain all its original running gear. The present owner inherited the car upon his passing, and after a period of storage with us, it has been decided to recommission the car (full oil service, brakes sorted, and some electrical work to name a few!) and now look for its next owner who may want to use the car and make improvements as they go.

The 1. 6 litre B-Series engine starts readily and runs nicely, ticking over smoothly and accelerates well enough on the road. The controls may be unassisted, but it is easy to drive and will get around town and country at 50-55 mph comfortably. The transmission and clutch all operate as they should, the steering is pretty direct and the brakes pull the car up strong and straight. There is the odd oil leak underneath once warm but nothing major.

Underneath, the car is nice and solid with no areas of rot to worry about – There’s a few areas of underseal which is flaking off; however, this will just want treating and recoating to preserve it – We’ve left it how it is to show its true condition. The spare wheel carrier ‘pan’ is present; however the spare wheel is not. The bodywork is lovely and polishes up well, there is only the odd small chip and mark here and there as well as a little bit of pitting in a couple of places but overall, it is very presentable. The worst area(s) to note are the front lower panel/ apron under the grill, and around the headlamps – There is some corrosion just bubbling through which could do with some attention. The interior is in useable condition and is all complete, although is a little tired places – The passenger seat has a few rips in the base, and the carpets appear to be ‘homemade’ but do the job well enough. All the electrical items work, aside from the old-LW/ MW radio which doesn’t although it could just be a connection?

Overall, this is a piece of fairly rare British motoring history, with not many being left on the road. It can be used and enjoyed as is, or improved upon with some restorative work over winter or as you go. As you can see, it isn’t a concours example but with simple mechanicals with parts shared over many BMC counterparts, it is also simple to own and maintain. It went through a clear MoT in June this year, so there is peace of mind it is roadworthy. The odometer shows 94, 775 miles, however we cannot verify this to be accurate.
