Description

1998 Peugeot 106 Rallye

GENERAL HISTORY

- 9 previous keepers.
- Owned by me since July 2017.
- Bought at 111k miles, now on just over 127k.
- Decent paperwork prior to my ownership (including for a cylinder head rebuild shortly before I bought the car).
- Loads of paperwork from my ownership - serviced annually at Pug1Off in Brackley, paperwork from every service plus other jobs required at each visit.
- Loads of old MOT certificates from prior to/ since my ownership.

CONDITION

- Generally very good condition.
- Body is solid - as you can see from the MOT history, very little mention of corrosion, corroborated by a look around the car. Little more than odd spots here and there. Usual 106 problem areas are all very tidy.
- Since my ownership, car has almost always been kept in a garage or dry storage, only infrequently driven in the rain (when I couldn't avoid it!), never driven in snow/ salty roads.
- Little rust spots poking through on the steel wheels.
- General body condition is good. Paint is imperfect - stone chips, scuffs, little parking dents here and there, and a scuff on the rear bumper from prior to my ownership (pictured) but polishes up nicely.
- Underbody and under-arches all very clean indeed.

INTERIOR

- All original.
- Most significant wear is to the driver's seat right-hand bolster, where the foam has degraded underneath, but the fabric is still in very good condition.
- Typical wear to the plastic steering wheel.
- Blue carpets are in good condition - a deep clean wouldn't hurt, but they've been protected by rubber mats throughout my ownership.
- Dashboard lighting and gauges all work.

MECHANICALS

- Engine feels great. Oil changes at every service, which means every 2-3k miles during my ownership. Makes good power too, as per the dyno video mentioned further down.
- Brakes feel good, pulls up straight, good power.
- Suspension and steering all seems to be as they should - behaves itself even driven hard. Steering rack was rebuilt in 2021.
- Some odd knocks and rattles, but nothing flagged up during MOT/ service.

I will have the car serviced and MOTd at Pug1Off prior to sale.

FEATURED WIDELY IN MEDIA

- Frequent appearances Evo Magazine's Fast Fleet between 2017 and 2025, and in an editorial feature around 2018
- Featured in (and on the cover of) Top Gear magazine December 2020 (issue 341)
- Frequent appearances in "Our Classics" on Hagerty UK website from 2021 to 2023
- Dyno video on the UPNDOWN YouTube channel September 2024
- Reviewed on the Oliver Pickard YouTube channel April 2022HISTORY

The 106 Rallye was a bit of a childhood dream car of mine, and after being tempted by videos and reviews of various Rallye-badged Peugeots, I finally bought one in July 2017.

I used the car only occasionally for the first few years but started driving it more regularly in 2020, and took the car on a 2400-mile French road trip in April 2022, where it was basically faultless and a huge amount of fun.

Since then I've used it whenever possible, albeit only during the warmer, drier months (as dry as the UK can be, anyway), and have done odd hill climbs and sprints with it too, where it's always a riot and surprisingly quick.

I'm selling the car because it fights for my attention with a Mazda MX-5 and an RX-7, and the latter especially is costing me a lot more money than the use I'm getting from it - and the Peugeot has become all too easy to default to because it's so fun and so well-behaved. Really the RX-7 needs my attention (and money) now to justify its existence, and as I also lack storage place, the Peugeot has to go - it's better someone else enjoys it now rather than me just neglecting it.

It is not a concours car (you'll pay a lot more for one of those) but it's not a basket case or badly modified either - just a visually and mechanically standard car that's in pretty good visual condition, and very easy to enjoy as-is. I genuinely don't think it'd take much effort to make it look even better - but if I'd done that, would I have wanted to drive it as much?
