Selling my Peugeot 404 Saloon right hand drive.
This is the iconic 404 incredibly rare in the UK with floor mounted Peugeot Fulray 4 speed gearbox.
This car has a great history which I have in the folder of history that belongs with the 404.
It was originally bought in South Africa in 1969 by a Mr Phil Hunt who ordered it with the Peugeot fulray floor mounted gear change and wider back rims for the Safari Rally which Phil completed it in. Eventually after many African adventures he moved to the UK in 1972 and brought it with him. He then just used it in the summer months and garaged it.
In 1984 Ken Couzens purchased the vehicle as an engineer he used it as his daily car and did many trips in it to Le Mans and looked after it until he passed away in 2025. In Ken’s ownership it was featured in a French auto magazine which the history has a copy. A dealer then purchased the 404 who I subsequently purchased it from.
I love the history of the 404 model with its rally wins in the 60’s in the East African rally’s and that Enzo Ferrari used one as his daily car. The model is very iconic in the history of French automobiles.
The car drives very well starts first time. I have ordered two new continental tyre’s for the front as the current ones are very old. I have also found a NOS front headlight from Sev Marchal the original supplier as the one currently fitted as some cracks The paintwork is original and very solid it has touch ups and marks as to be expected from a car of this age that has not been resprayed but that’s personally how I like them. The engine is in fine condition as I believe from the history that Ken rebuilt it in 2000. The sills and underside are in fantastic condition.
The seats are original and have two areas backseat and the side of the drivers seat where the stitching has come away I have just put leather tape on there to tidy it up. The main thing I want to make clear as it seems the ignition key area developed an issue so Ken as an engineer rewired it to a push button start which works perfectly.
This is not a show car but a lovely day driver and incredibly rare in the UK as a right hand drive with factory fitted floor mounted gear change I believe it might be the only one in the UK.
I have decided to sell my 404 at a very fair price and also will be selling my Lancia Fulvia as I want an Alvis TE 21 which I have seen available.
I have used a decent transport chap very reliable if you need any help with transport.
