Kawasaki kz400 D 1975 UK reg bike. Tax/ mot exempt.
I have been told mileage is genuine and until this year was not used since 1978, still fitted with 1978 tax disc.
Starts easily hot or cold and runs nicely for a bike of this age. Very easy to ride, handles great and stops well.
Recently had a full strip down restoration by previous owner including:
Powder coat frame
Full engine strip new bearings piston rings bores checked
Gear cluster stripped cleaned all in good order / new clutch plates etc
All new wheel and head stock bearings
New chain / sprockets
New brake shoes pads seals lines etc
Bottom engine case was replaced due to a crack.
New on / off road tyres, new exhaust silencers.
Needed a bit of finishing off when I got it so I have:
New front wheel bearings
Carbs Cleaned and Tuned
New head gasket and all o'rings replaced (to cure oil leak, now fine). Cylinders honed.
Valve stem seals replaced. Valve clearances set, valve leak check all ok.
Timing set
Points cleaned
New air filter
New spark plugs
Charging cable fitted
New Horn
Exhaust baffles fitted
Electric start works well as does kick start. Fuel tank is remarkably clean inside. The tank is in very good condition but looks like top of it has been repainted at some point and it doesn't quite match, it would benefit from some fresh paint but it has some character and is ok as it is. All lights and instruments work.
A few minor issues - Exhaust is not standard. Choke lever doesn't stay up without holding it, but it warms up enough after few seconds not to be an issue. Slight tear in the seat vinyl, some chrome issues on rear mudguard. Idle isn't as consistent as I'd like so maybe some further tuning needed but it runs great. Has lots spent already but offers a nice little project for further restoration or just ride it as is. The Kawasaki KZ400 is a classic, parallel-twin motorcycle produced from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s, known for its reliable and economical commuter performance. It featured a 399cc air-cooled engine, a top speed of around 93-100 mph, and fuel efficiency that could reach 50-60 mpg. The KZ400 was a direct competitor to bikes like the Honda CB400T, and its narrow, nimble design made it a popular choice for both new and experienced riders.
