Very special 280 SL with history from new. Includes the booklets and maintenance invoices. With a verifiable mileage of 20, 570 km and in this condition almost impossible to find. Delivered new in Johannesburg and used as a second car by the first owner. After 15 years, the SL was taken to Switzerland as part of a removal. There, the current Dutch owner bought the car from the widow of the first owner.
This SL cannot be compared to the average offering on the internet. The car drives, feels and steers like new. You can restore a classic car to infinity, but this Mercedes-Benz is unrestored and 90% of the body is in its original paint.
The exterior is completely original and, of course, rust-free. The colour is called “signal red 568” and the paint has a beautiful deep shine. The car has been recently polished, so the body is super smooth. The original bonnet looks like new and you can see from everything that the car has always been kept indoors. There is also a hardtop, which has hardly been used and is therefore also in new condition. And the doors still close like a safe, as was customary for a Mercedes-Benz at the time. Absolute top quality, they don't make them like this anymore...
The interior is 100% original and, of course, in very good condition. The seats look like new, which is logical given the mileage. The dashboard is intact and all instruments work as they should. Another nice feature is the iconic Becker Mexico radio-cassette recorder with motorised antenna. It was supplied at a considerable extra cost and still works perfectly. The original pin to lock the gearbox is very special and extremely rare. In South Africa, this was a useful option to prevent theft.
The SL has therefore been driven very little, but has been meticulously maintained. No expense has been spared and there are invoices for €37, 100 worth of maintenance and repairs. Excessive? Yes, that's true. But on the advice of an SL classic car specialist, the widow also did everything she could to keep her beloved convertible in this condition. And she succeeded! The R107 was built for no less than 18 years and, despite its high purchase price and steep prices for options, it was the most popular German convertible for many years.
