Description
1975 MGB GT – One of the Last Chrome Bumper Models – Matching Numbers – Restoration Project
For sale is my 1975 MGB GT, an early chrome-bumper car and one of the last produced before the change to rubber bumpers, offered as a genuine restoration project. This is a reluctant sale due to a change in personal circumstances.
Overview
- 1975 MGB GT
- One of the last chrome bumper models before rubber bumpers were introduced
- Matching chassis and engine numbers, confirmed on V5
- UK RHD car
- 1. 8-litre (1798cc) B-series engine
- 4-speed manual gearbox. Overdrive gearbox present and believed to be fitted, however buyer is advised to satisfy themselves.
- V5 log book present (shows 8 previous keepers – typical for a car of this age)
- Acquired by me in November 2020
Chassis & Engine
- Chassis / VIN: GHD5-359783-G
(Confirms genuine UK-market, chrome-bumper MGB GT, early 1975 production)
- Engine: 18V780F
Correct UK-spec, high-compression B-series engine for a chrome-bumper GT
- Engine number matches the V5
- Engine is not seized, however a full mechanical rebuild will be required
Mileage
The odometer currently reads 07, 634 miles. Due to the age of the vehicle and the fact that it is a long-term restoration project, the mileage cannot be warranted and is believed to have rolled over at least once, meaning the true mileage is likely 107, 634 miles.
As with most classic cars of this era, mileage should be considered indicative only.
History & Condition
The previous owner advised that the majority of the bodywork was completed prior to my purchase, with the car being stripped for restoration and put into primer before the project stopped due to a change in circumstances.
I bought the car intending to complete a proper, correct restoration. Since then I’ve had a child and no longer have the spare time required to do the car justice. This is genuinely a reluctant sale and I’d much rather see it go to someone who can finish the project properly.
The shell is largely complete and was washed following purchase in 2020 to remove storage dust, allowing the condition of the metalwork to be clearly seen. It presents as an honest restoration base with no attempt to disguise issues.
What’s Included
- Rolling shell in primer
- Original matching-numbers engine fitted
- Gearbox present
- Suspension and steering fitted
- Boxes of original parts removed during strip-down (panels, trim, fixings, mechanical components, etc.)
- Driver side door panel, passenger side missing.
- Set of wheel dollies included, making movement and loading much easier
- Photographs included from prior to strip-down (for reference), showing the car in a complete and original state before restoration began
What’s Required
- Full mechanical rebuild
- Interior refit
- Final body preparation and paint
- Bonnet and passenger door are not fitted / missing
- General recommissioning as part of a full restoration
Transport
The car is NOT drivable and will require trailering or transport via a low-loader / van.
It rolls and steers, and the included wheel dollies assist with positioning and loading.
Summary
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a matching-numbers, early 1975 MGB GT, one of the last chrome-bumper examples, with much of the heavy strip-down already done and a clear restoration path ahead. Ideal for an MG enthusiast looking for a correct base car rather than a bitsa.

Viewing welcome. Sensible questions and inspections encouraged. I’ve always been into classic cars, with the MGB GT being one of my all-time favourites. After extensively restoring a 1991 Mini Cooper years ago, I wanted my next project to be something equally iconic but different in character. When I came across this MG, I knew it was the right car.
What really stood out to me was that it’s one of the last chrome-bumper GTs, with matching numbers and a clear restoration path already started. It has that perfect combination of classic British styling, practicality, and driving character that makes the GT so appealing. My favourite thing about it is knowing it’s a proper, correct example — not a bitsa — and that with the work completed, it would make a fantastic classic to enjoy and be proud of.
It deserves to be finished and enjoyed by someone who loves these cars as much as I do.
