Description
With the factory colour scheme of black over red set off by the chrome wire wheels, this car looks absolutely stunning and is totally immaculate. With just 50, 000 miles covered from new, this UK supplied TR4 is an unrepeatable opportunity for the purchaser seeking a correct, unmolested example. Though many TRs are resurrected as rebuilds, low mileage and largely original survivors such as this are much rarer. With an impressive file of paperwork charting its life, there is also a very unusual photographic record of this car – the first pictures being taken at the original owner’s home when it was less than a week old. The car was photographed again at 22, 000 miles in 1978 for a Sothebys auction catalogue (testament even then to its low mileage and outstanding condition) and there were more photographs taken by the second owner in the early 1980’s. It was photographed again ‘as found’ following some years in dry storage and more still from 2008 when the owner re-united the car with the original family taking snaps of it on the same driveway spot where it had stood back in 1965. About 12 years ago the car was very sympathetically rejuvenated to show condition. It was stripped and repainted in its original factory black and the metal dash was also removed for painting in its original white. Gloss black is notoriously difficult to get right and this paintwork is deep, flawless and professionally detailed. Approximately 2 years ago a complete new interior was fitted in the original Matador Red piped white, five new 5x15 chrome wire wheels were fitted (including spare) with new, correct size 165-15 Blockley tyres and a NOS mild steel twin outlet exhaust. Mechanically it is spot-on with new brakes and suspension all round, refurbished carbs including the incredibly rare original air filters, electronic ignition, electric fan and alternator conversion. A period correct Motorola radio is fitted. This is a car you can jump in and drive anywhere. This is the purest example of Michelotti’s timeless Italian design, with the lines unspoilt by chrome trim, side lights or wing mirrors. The factory fitted Surrey top provides an elegant enclosed cabin with the option of removing the aluminium centre section for wind in the hair motoring. You can see why Porsche copied this idea for their Targa.
