Description
1997/ 1999 Land Rover Discovery Series 1 3. 9 V8 – 23, 000 Miles (37156 kms) – Japan-Sourced Example – Exceptional Provenance
£19, 995
A rare opportunity to acquire what is likely one of the lowest mileage and structurally cleanest Discovery Series 1 examples currently available in the UK. This vehicle was personally sourced in Japan as part of a long-standing involvement in importing low-mileage and rare classic vehicles over the past 15+ years.
It remained stationary from 2009 on the outdoor forecourt of a small independent garage in Oyama (north of Tokyo), where it was observed over multiple visits to Japan across a 10-year period before finally being acquired in late 2023.
Japanese Shaken records confirm it was last in road use in 2009. The vehicle was subsequently imported to the UK in spring 2024.
⸻
Registration
• UK registered as a 1999 (T-reg) via the DVLA
• Reflects first registration in Japan (1999)
• Heritage documentation from Jaguar Land Rover confirms a 1997 build date
• DVLA have confirmed the vehicle can be re-registered as a 1997 model upon application, should a future owner wish to do so (excellent option to make the car LEZ (low emission zone) exempt from 2027)
⸻
Condition & Structure
Due to prolonged outdoor storage, the paintwork shows lacquer fade and sun damage throughout and would benefit from a full respray.
However, the structural condition is exceptional and highly unusual for a Discovery of this age:
• Completely rust-free on arrival in the UK
• Original chassis, sills, and wings all present and solid
• Exceptionally clean underside (no exposure to salted roads)
Inspected by Gems 4x4 of Falkirk (Land Rover specialits in Scotland) who described it as:
“One of the cleanest Discovery 1s we have seen in the last 15 years.”
⸻
Originality
This is a highly original, unrestored example.
Aside from essential wear-and-tear items replaced during recommissioning, the vehicle retains:
• Original exhaust system
• Original brake lines
• Original structural and mechanical components
The paintwork remains in its sun-affected, as-found condition, reflecting its history rather than being cosmetically restored.
⸻
Recommissioning & Investment (2024)
Following import, the vehicle underwent comprehensive recommissioning to return it to roadworthy & UK MOT condition, with expenditure in excess of £3, 000–£4, 000.
This work addressed age-related deterioration from long-term storage rather than mileage use and included:
• New Bosch battery
• New fuel pump
• New front & rear shock absorbers
• New front drop links (with mounts)
• New steering damper
• Rear upper differential support arm & ball joint
• Oil seal Axle replaced
• New front ABS sensors
• New window regulator
• New rear wiper motor & washer system
• New wiper blades
Front D-Bushes
Front top mounts & bottom mounts
Full service completed including:
• Engine oil
• Gearbox oil (full service)
• Differential oils
• Coolant
• Brake fluid
• Power steering fluid
Additionally:
• Brand new set of tyres fitted
• Fresh MOT recently completed again in April 2026
⸻
Engine & Driving Experience
• 3. 9 litre V8 petrol engine
• Exceptionally smooth and refined in operation
• Drives in a manner consistent with its ultra-low mileage
The V8 performs exactly as one would expect from a 23, 000-mile example—smooth, quiet, and composed, with none of the wear typically associated with higher-mileage vehicles.
⸻
Ownership Since Import
Shortly after recommissioning, the vehicle was placed into storage due to relocation abroad and has only recently been returned to use.
• Stored from autumn 2024 until recently
• Never driven in rain during UK ownership
• Kept off salted roads
• Only high-octane fuel used
⸻
Key Highlights
• 23, 000 miles from new
• Off the road since 2009 (Japan)
• Rust-free, highly original structure
• Extensive recommissioning completed (£3k–£4k)
• Fresh MOT & new tyres
• 3. 9 V8 – most desirable configuration
• Unique, well-documented provenance
⸻
Summary
This is not a typical Discovery—it is a low-mileage, time-capsule example with exceptional structural integrity.
Most Discovery Series 1 vehicles on the market suffer from corrosion and heavy use. This example offers the opposite: a remarkably well-preserved, original vehicle requiring only cosmetic refinement.
A full respray would elevate this into a top-tier collector-grade example.
