2003 BMW K1200GT £1295 ono
MOT September 2026
Just over 45000 miles
For sale, my 2003 BMW K1200GT. The bike isn’t perfect (it’s 23 years old) and has a couple of issues (see below), but it’s still very presentable, and the BMW luggage and Givi top box make it a very capable tourer. I’m selling it as I didn’t end up doing the touring I planned, and I’ve just bought a cruiser motorcycle to potter around on.
The bike runs well and starts first time, every time, even after standing for a week or two. No unusual engine or gearbox noises. Its shaft drive, of course, so no chain or belt to worry about.
It has heated grips (work), heated seat (not so sure if this works), cruise control (never been brave enough to try it, so unsure if it works), ABS and a windscreen which can be raised or lowered (this does work).
Condition wise it’s pretty good. There are a few scratches here and there, but no cracks or gouges in the fairing. The tyres are still good and have plenty of life left in them. It’s comfortable and the seat has a couple of height positions to suit taller or shorter riders.
The bike has a manual, spare keys, and some service history. It comes with the original BMW matching luggage ( a few scratches – nothing serious), an aftermarket rear rack, and an older top box (has a few scratches) which I fitted to carry my laptop when I use the bike for work. Unfortunately, the box came to me without the detachable plate, so is mounted in place by four screws. It’s easy enough to take off in a couple of minutes, though.
Since I’ve had it, it has had:
New battery
Fork seals done
Oil and filter change
Air filter change
Aftermarket rear rack fitted (for the top box)
And now the not-so-good bits:
Brake warning light. The bike has developed an intermittent fault where the brake warning light occasionally comes on, and the bike loses pressure to the back brake. This sometimes clears on its own after a mile or so, but sometimes the warning light will stay on. Turning the engine off and on again resets the light and the back brake returns. Weird. At first, I thought it was something to do with the bike getting hot, as it first happened when the radiator fans were on while standing in traffic on a hot day, but I think it’s more to do with holding the brakes on for an extended period of time. It doesn’t happen on every ride, and I’ve been unable to get to the bottom of it. Make of it what you will.
Fork Seal: I’ve just noticed that one of the fork seals has started to leak, so will need looking at.
Clutch: The clutch and gearbox have always been fine, but sometimes when you try to engage first gear when the bike is cold, it is hesitant to engage and you have to let out the clutch slightly until it drops in. After this it’s fine. Thought I better mention it.
Anyway, if you’ve read this far, there it is. I’ve been totally honest as I don’t want to mislead anyone. I’m open to offers, but not silly ones, as I think I’ve priced it fairly. More, than happy to answer any questions. I encourage you to come and have a look at the bike so you can see the condition for yourself. I have a video of it starting and running that I can send if required. It’s located in Cannock, Staffordshire. Performance-wise it is very well mannered, and the large engine pulls away smoothly. It’s isn’t high-revving and ‘snatchy’ like the Kawasaki ZZR that I had, which seemed to want to throw me off the back all the time, but feels a bit more like a car engine, if that makes sense (it is the size of a Ford Fiesta engine after all!). It will really go if you want it to, but is designed more for touring, and is very stable and confidence-inspiring at motorway speeds. Nice exhaust note if you accelerate hard.
