BMW 728i E38 1997 Automatik Benzin
Powered by BMW’s smooth and reliable 2. 8L M52 straight-six engine, paired with an automatic gearbox. The car starts, runs and drives well, delivering the refined and comfortable driving experience these E38s are known for.
The interior presents nicely overall with classic BMW wood trim, grey leather seats and electric seat adjustment. It still feels like a proper luxury car and remains a very comfortable place to be.
Background
I purchased it from CoPart as a Cat S and completed the repairs with the hope to give it as a gift to my father in law who is current undergoing treatment for a health condition. Unfortunately, he is unable to drive it due to this and hence the sale. No expense has been spared in repairing it, seeing as it was going to stay within the family for years to come. I have all photos from before showing the damage and repairs carried out. I can send these over if requested.
The following has been completed since January 2026:
Repair to spare tyre tub
Second hand rear bumper and trims
Replacement rear pass light cluster
New battery
New front shocks and springs
New front brake discs and pads
New arb bushes
New control arm bushes
New fuel tank (old one was leaking on inspection, costing £585 + £500 fitting)
New radio display
New number plates
New radiator (leaking on inspection)
Full service carried out, oil, filter, air filter and spark plugs
Will come with 12 months MOT

Condition / Notes
As with many cars of this age there are a few age-related issues:
- Some typical E38 rush starting at the bottom of the drivers door
- Common issue of the roof lining split and dropped
- Main cluster display missing segments
- The car is a Cat S on the log book - no service history as Copart cannot pass on due to GDPR
- small crack on front bumper trim
- small dent on rear below number plate (pictured)
- M Sport Wheels
- M Sport steering wheel
Despite these points the car still presents well overall and would make a great usable modern classic or straightforward project for someone who appreciates these increasingly sought-after BMWs.

This is a 25+ year old classic BMW, not a brand new car. It has a few age-related cosmetic issues as described above, however it starts, runs and drives well and still presents nicely overall.
It would make a great usable classic, light project or enthusiast car.
