The Mercedes-Benz G-Class or G-Wagon, short for Geländewagen (cross-country vehicle), is characterised by its boxy styling and body-on-frame construction. It uses three fully locking differentials, one of the few vehicles to have such a feature. The G-Class is still in production and is one of the longest produced Mercedes-Benz vehicles in their history with a span of 45 years+. It was developed as a military vehicle from a suggestion by the Shah of Iran and offered as a civilian version in 1979. The first major refinements were introduced in 1981, including an automatic transmission, air conditioning, an auxiliary fuel tank, protective headlamp grilles and a cable winch. Fuel injection became available in 1982 when the 230GE was introduced in Turin, along with more comfortable and supportive front seats, auxiliary heating, wider tyres and wheel arches. For 1985, differential locks, central door locking and a tachometer became standard. Originally registered in 1991, this short wheelbase (3door), petrol engine, G-Wagon defies the mileage as it presents exceedingly well. Clearly a very well looked after example, the blue coachwork is virtually unmarked and the grey leather interior shows no significant signs of wear and is unblemished. We are advised she drives as good as she looks and the engine certainly sounds great. This highly desirable Mercedes-Benz has been well maintained, including a gearbox service, a new exhaust system and an engine overhaul by EPC of Feltham in 2019. Supplied with the original owner’s manual and maintenance booklet, together with two sets of keys, previous service receipts, a V5C registration document and a current MoT test certificate valid until 2027, this 35 year old utility vehicle is fitted with automatic transmission and offers versatility, reliability and prestige all in one. This has been my daily driver when I can get to use it. A great car that I have owned since 2002, it has been well maintained and looked after. A great practical G Wagen for use around town, it can also easily handle cruising on motorways too. Part of my private collection it has to now go, along with my; 1989 Mercedes 560SEC, 1993 Mercedes 300GEL G Wagen (5door) and 1993 Mercedes 500 SEC.
