Beautiful Norton Commando. Completely re built . In excellent condition and running well.
I bought this bike in 2019 apparently just needing a few jobs to get it running. It was my third Norton and my objective was to have a Commando as close to perfect as reasonably possible. The frame was powder coated and the steel tank and side panels had a very professional finish in 2 pack paint. Most cycle parts were new or refinished. The engine had been rebuilt - the crankcase assembled and dynamically balanced by SRM. It was fitted with new Premier carbs and Tri-Spark ignition. However it was difficult to start and once running it oiled the plugs and cut out. That was the start of a 4 year 'adventure' to get it sorted out involving a cast of multiple villains and heroes which I writing up for the Norton Owners Club. However for the sake of this advert here is the bottom line :-
Engine re-bored and fitted with new Hepolite pistons, polished and balanced.
Rings correctly gapped and bedded in.
High quality G&S valves fitted to colisbro guides.
Seats re cut and blended.
Tappets re faced , cam and valve train lubed with cam break in oil.
Tappet adjusters radiused and polished.
Tappet adjuster alignment to valve tips checked and set correctly.
Base gasket replaced with loctite 749 for reliability and slight CR increase.
Copper head gasket annealed . Head fixings slackened and re-torqued during running in process.
The engine has now been properly run in - zero smoke and very strong performance.
Other items of note :-
TLS front drum - This was a whole saga in itself, squealing or grabbing unpredictably unlike a similar brake I have which works very well. This is now sorted with RGM woven shoes, stiffening kit - Properly set up and lubricated where appropriate with ceramic brake grease. Currently bedding in new shoes.
Horn works !
Room for improvement :-
Clutch is a bit heavy - stack height adjustment and or a better cable would improve it . Front brake cable has a brake switch which adds considerable lever travel. A heavy duty non-switch cable would be better IMHO.
Rear light housing has a chip and screw insecure.
Very slight leak from Primary Case ( ATF) - I have a new seal ready to install but since this should be done along with stack height check I have not found the time. Oportunity for a new owner !
Switch gear is reversed on the bars - i. e left set is fitted on right side of handlebars and vice versa. Simple matter to swap side to side but again not bothered me enough once you learn where they are
Summary :-
Excellent condition and running very well - I have other projects so it's time to pass this bike on to a new owner to ride and maintain.
Priced sensibly at 8250 - or 8500 if you want to haggle. Seriously I think 8250 is fair but happy to discuss price with anyone after they have viewed it.
