I bought this LHD microbus in 2010 after it had been imported from Poland and UK registered by Herbie Hospital. It was a German Post Office microbus, so its odometer is over 265, 000km, but there’s probably nothing left of the original bus.
From 2010 to 2016, it was used for my family holidays, travelling to France, Germany and the Netherlands – a tow bar was fitted to take a bike carrier. I also used the bus to help me to write two books on making your own campervan and maintaining and modifying the VW Type 2, along with writing numerous technical articles for VWC&C magazine, showing how to make repairs and fit parts and upgrades.
The bodywork was resprayed in 2011. Throughout its ownership, bodywork repairs have been completed when needed (door bottoms, sills and arches) and I’ve kept on top of rustproofing and servicing. In 2016, an aftermarket fuel injection system was installed with a programmable ECU (connected via a Windows laptop).
I last used this vehicle in 2017. Since then, it has remained inside my garage at home, having drained the fuel tank, dyed the headlining and painted the interior flooring. More recently, I’ve added fresh petrol (E5) to the tank and run the engine. However, after having not been used for so long, I recommend the next owner has it transported and checked over before driving it.
I’ll be sad to see this Bay go. It has been part of my family for 16 years, but is no longer used, so it needs a new owner.
