A true icon of the 1970s, the Volkswagen Combi T2 embodies the spirit of freedom, travel and conviviality. Originally conceived as a versatile commercial vehicle, it quickly won over a much wider audience, becoming a cultural symbol and an essential adventure companion across the world.
The T2AB is a so-called "bay window" model, representing a transition phase between the T2A and T2B.
Indeed, it features the front end of the T2A with indicators below the headlights and round bumper, and the rear lights of the T2B. These aesthetic specificities make it rare.
This example was first registered in 1969 in England, then converted to LHD, replacing the original steering system with a rack and pinion steering, giving it more modern and safer handling.
On the mechanical side, the original flat 4 engine has been replaced by a modernised and optimised 1800cc engine with electronic ignition and a reworked intake featuring two carburettors per cylinder bank, offering better throttle response and improved reactivity. The whole setup delivers smooth and pleasant operation, perfectly suited for leisure use and touring, whilst respecting the character of the model.
The gearbox has been replaced with a long-ratio box coupled to a short-throw lever. It guides and locks the gears perfectly and allows cruising on motorways at sensible revs.
The road behaviour is sound and in line with expectations for a Combi T2. The shock absorbers have been replaced with modern gas dampers, making the chassis more enjoyable.
The running gear shows no abnormal play.
The AB version of the T2 features more modern disc braking at the front and drums at the rear, giving it reassuring and balanced braking.
The wheels are in excellent condition and accompanied by new chrome hub caps, all shod with recent tyres.
The paintwork demonstrates the quality of the work carried out and perfectly showcases its iconic lines.
The underside is perfectly sound, like the vehicle overall, and free from corrosion and rust. The gleaming chrome and sealed tonneau cover complete the overall presentation.
The beige interior is in excellent condition, faithful to the seventies spirit. The woven wicker storage pocket and details added to the cabin add a touch of charm and authenticity to this Combi.
The load bed is equipped with marine-treated wood and an interior work light.
The heating system has been modernised, making it more pleasant.
The door panels, seats and interior trim are in excellent condition and have been carefully restored.
The driving position offers simple ergonomics, typical of Combis of this generation. As the original instrumentation was basic, a full instrument cluster with rev counter, fuel gauge, temperature and oil pressure gauges have been added, allowing you to monitor the vehicle's vital information.
